About to make call to RSPCA

Went to visit someone I hadn't seen in a few years.
Well, I saw 12 Guineas in 4 cages on the kitchen counter. There was another 5 in wooden hutches out in the freezing cloakroom.

I was also led to beleive there was another 20 out in the shed.

What bothered me the most was all the water bottles were empty, food dishes were empty, and a couple of them had strange 'scratch' marks on their backs. There was faeces all over ever cage...and the house literally stunk of ammonia. There was shit all over the kitchen floor and shit matted into their fur.

When 'certain someone' went to bed, me and DD1 filled up heaps of empty water bottles, and the poor little blighters were so thirsty, they were soaking wet through where they had to fight over the bottle nozzle.

I'm home now and all I can think about is those poor guineas. DD1 wanted to bring a little pup home with her, but I said no as they looked really unwell. And if they're not being fed and watered properly, there will be vets bills for malnourishment....

I'm dreading picking up the phone but needs must.

ouch.
sounds horrid for you, dd and the guineas.

UmSami · 03/11/2008 01:14

You're right, needs must...MAKE THE CALL!
Poor you, poor dd, poor guineas!

MeMySonAndI · 03/11/2008 03:45

did you call?

squatchette · 03/11/2008 03:55

How horrid for you and dd ,instinct makes you want to take them all home but obviously you can't .You are doing the only thing you can for them.
Did the friend say why she had so many ,did she seem oblivious to their poor conditions?
Sounds like the house is a bit of a shit hole or was it just the animals part ,even worse imoemoticon??
Either way I really hope you did call the RSPCA .

squatchette · 03/11/2008 03:56

That should have read {{{nosy emoticon}}}!

DustyTv · 03/11/2008 06:38

How awful, you know you have to do it. It is so hard though isn't it.

I once had to call the RSPCA about a neighbours dog and they were fantastic.

ninedragons · 03/11/2008 07:17

They're very diplomatic, IME. We had to call them about a neighbour who had trapped a stray kitten and left it tied to a lawnmower with no food or water (neighbour was bloody nuts).

They were great - they convinced him to surrender the kitten, we rang them that afternoon, they tidied the kitten up and gave him his shots and five years later he's still happily living with us.

Macdog · 03/11/2008 08:25

Make the call.

bella29 · 03/11/2008 09:31

Absolutely. Call them - 0870 55 55 999.

alphadaydreamer · 04/11/2008 00:44

Call them and ask them to tell you what action they take.

I did make the call. And I also called social services too.

There is a 14 yr old kid with terminal cancer living in the house too.
We took some pics when we was there. Am sure that it was blood spattered up the wall. Rat traps everywhere. Rooms so full of junk that kids couldn't even get into bed. Buckets of chemo sick everywhere unemptied.

DD1 is now an unregistered Mnetter. She's 14, and all she did all weekend was judge.

Makes me feel sick for those kids and those animals.

Sounds as though you did the right thing - they need a lot of help. Maybe mum of the 14 yo has had a nervous breakdown and just can't cope with anything any more?

I once lent an old pony to a dear friend as a companion for his horse. His wife was dying of cancer and I was horrified to find that he was totally neglecting the horses - they had long, untrimmed hooves and the pony had nearly starved to death. I've never been able to get my head around the fact that this warm, caring man I thought I knew so well was so wrapped up in his domestic situation that he caused those animals such suffering.

bella29 · 04/11/2008 09:43

Well done, Purplepumpkin - it sounds like you did the right thing and at least now they can all get some help.

PurplePumpkinWitchyOne · 04/11/2008 17:25

I did it all anonymously though. DD1 is asking me to ring them back and ask if all the guineas were rescued, and to double check that the ones hidden in the cloakroom were found.
Are they obliged to tell me?

DD1 is worrying herself sick. We have guineas ourselves, so she feels ever so slightly passionate about it.

Whenever I have called the RSPCA I have always given my name because they NEVER pass it on. EVER.

SO, when I have called, I have left a number and asked if the inspector can call me with an update. They usually do, and if they don't I call thr RSPCA back again for msg to be passed to inspector reminding him/her to call me.

I was horrified to hear this story. It is unimaginable how some people live and treat animals - disgraceful.

I didn't get this part of your post 'DD1 is now an unregistered Mnetter. She's 14, and all she did all weekend was judge.'

Leighlucky5 · 05/11/2008 18:42

could you speak to the person and explian you worries first? maybe urge them to give the pets to rspca themselves? this might prevent the person being prosecuted later. if they dont take the opportunity then i think that you definatley must report them.

Bride1 · 05/11/2008 19:07

This is so sad. Sounds like the mother is very mentally unwell herself.
