Was out today with my dog. Passing through field of sheep sp dog on lead. Two adolescent dogs ahead. I siad to the owner that my dog not friendly but his dog ran right up to mine.

My dog bit his dog on forehead. I pulled him away, looked at injury etc and was v apologetic and concerned. Injury very minor but close to eye.

I said would he like my name and address. But then I added that I wouldn't necessarily accept liability because my dog was under control and his approached out of control.

I would really appreciate it if anyone knew what the laibility situationwas here. He didn't even try to call his dog off.

The worst part was what happened next. The owner lost his temper completely and hit my dog with a heavy chainlink lead. He then raised his fist to me and said he would hit me. I threatened to go to police etc. Much swearing, called me a 'grass' and threatened to hit me again, raising his fist.

I do appreciate that my dog started the whole sequence, and I understand that the man was upset. So I'm very concenred to know what you think about a bit that happens because a dog on the lead has been pestered by an offlead dog.

Mans DP was there and said nothing either to support him or to stop him.

Yes. Hitting my dog was the worst of it by far. Bear in mind too that my dog had been standing quietly without any agression for a good few minutes by then, while we looked at the bite. He was hit out of the blue completely. Wonder how long it will be before he starts hitting his own dogs (if he hasn't already).

And so sorry your dog was attacked. I hope he is fine now.

My dog is great now, thanks.

yes, what kind of man is this, who rants and raves at a woman he does not know, and cooly and calmly hits out at a dog. I thought when you said he hit your dog, that it was in the heat of the moment as soon as it happened, fuelled by shock and anger etc

He sounds like a complete maniac, and someone who should not own dogs. Have you heard from him? If you do, I would tell him to piss off unless he wants reporting to the poklice and the RSPCA for hurting your dog. How is your dog, did he mark him with the lead?

He's ok thanks. Dodged like an eel. Worry is that he will be less trusting of people: he's always been fine with humans.

i.e., hit, but not with full force.

Your dog was under control, the other dog was out of control - he was not on a lead.

Did you give him your name and address?
Do you have any witnesses?

threadworm - I think the other owner was in the wrong. Clearly. Your dog was under control, his weren't. You warned him, he chose to do nothing about it.

My parents have a jack russel who is very good-natured unless approached by other dogs when on his lead. I think they feel threatened by being unable to respond as they think appropriate.

OrmIrian · 03/11/2008 11:03

And yes, as someone said earlier, those unleashed dogs could have been shot by the farmer if he saw them running near his sheep. And he would have been within his rights.

Flier · 03/11/2008 11:07

so glad you reported this to the police - will they be able to take it further with the other dog owner?

and of course you have done nothing wrong, your dog was on the lead and must have felt quite threatened having 2 adult dogs run up to him, your dog was doing what dogs do!
