Just got back from weekend away. My parents who had moved in, had forgotten to give the snail any water. She (the snail) is very cold now and totally retreated into shell, sealed herself up. I have put her in a shallow tub of tepid water to see if I can revive her but no luck. Oh dear! What do I do?

Thanks JKSIF.

Good news! "And on the third day he/she/it rose again"....! She (the snail) has shed her membrane and has moved!!!! Yes she is alive. Phew.

Se has got a banana as a waking-up treat.

Hurrah!

Millarkie · 29/10/2008 21:09

Yeah! Thought she'd wake up - 3 days is nothing - Shelly would do weeks at a time!

Relief!

Hello, I know this is a really old thread (I found it doing a google search) but thought I'd comment on how helpful it was all these years later!! I have been looking after my friends snail while they are away and know nothing about them, it hadn't moved in a few days so thought I'd killed it! ..... Luckily after smelling it (and no smell) I gave it a fair amount of warm water in its tank as it was quite dry and sat its tank in a sink of hot water to make it nice and hot and after a few mins was very glad to see its head pop out its shell !! :)

Some of you might be wondering if your african land snail is dead?
You can tell if your snail is dead because its shell will start to turn white. This won't happen in a day it will happen over 3 days. This will sound so weird but you can smell if they are dead, they will almost smell old blood. You will also notice that the body isn't slimy anymore it is more or a rubbery texture. I got 2 snails in October and one of them didn't grow at all, today and days before i noticed it wasn't moving and its shell was gradually Turing white, it was dead. This will sound gross but you will for sure know when there dead if you put their body on tissue then gradually pull the shell off,it will slide off easily...
I hope this was some help

Your snail 🐌 is just hibernating run over the crusty layer with your finger and run the shell under tepid water don’t drown it and it should come out of its shell then put back in a warm wet tank with food

A zombie thread about a snail. Is OP still trying to revive it.

Jesus, I wish I could unread that snail sex part. Why was that traumatic. I didn’t know that I didn’t want to know about snail sex.

TW - TMI re: Snail Sex

And a zombie thread.

Aw, wasn't MN nice and supportive back in the day?

Ducksurprise · 15/03/2022 23:19

QueenBee what were you searching for to end up on this thread.

Amazing what you can learn on mn, wonder if the op still has snails

LadyAnglerfish · 15/03/2022 23:27

I think learning about human sex is definitely weirder and more traumatising than snail sex.

I have no advice, nor did I 10 years ago - but I love the fact she loved her snail like this.

I love snails too Grin
