hello I have been given a senegal parrot because my friends mum who owns him is very ill and it is doing her a huge favour taking one of her many parrots off her. He is lovely and incredibly friendly, the only problem is, he hasn't lived in a living room for a good few years, he's lived with other parrots, and his screech is hideous it is so loud and high pitched, it makes the cat run out of the room, the dog run in circles and the baby cry. And it drives me and dh nuts.

Can you train a parrot not to make this awful noise? if so, how? and quickly before i have to banish him to outside

TIA

I would give some serious thought about whether or not a parrot is the right pet for you. They are noisy and unlikely to change. They do need company a lot though so banishing him outside is not necessarily a good thing to be doing - unless you are going to be able to provide him with more bird company outside, and suitable warm accommodation etc etc.

I understand the difficult situation whereby he has come to need a new home and the fact you have taken him in as a favour, but perhaps he would be better with an experienced owner. There are ways of finding such people so let me know and I can try and help you out if you need it.

Otherwise...earplugs!! - oh and you do get more used to the noise in time, but be warned your vistors will be reacting all the time when you are used to it!

Good luck whatever you choose

www.greyforums.net are great for advice or parrot rescue if you decide to re-home. I have just got an African grey baby so trying to train at mo but it's harder if bird is older and has a 'learnt behaviour'.
good luck x

They can be incredibly noisy and are as demanding as your average toddler. They crave company (leave TV/radio on when you are out) and find things for it to do......mine used to ove destroying the insides of toilet rolls, anything cardboard....tearing paper and plenty of parot oriented stuff from petshops.
BAd news is-other than the loo rolls, the wodden ones (which last longer) tend to be expensive.
That said-they can be lovely and rewarding pets-good luck!
