Cat advice please - lots of questions posed by a cat novice

A stray cat went in to my neighbour's last night and gave birth to two kittens (one has died). Firstly, is this usual to only have two?

Secondly, my neighbour is going away and I've offered to keep an eye and look after cat. I know that the cat is going to be very hungry so I should give lots of food, but anything else? Apparently, the cat doesn't like moving away from her kitten for food, going to litter tray so I have to bring it to her.

Lastly, my neighbour has a regular cat who will be around too. She says she's left him lots of food so shouldn't grab mother cat's food. anything else we should be doing?

Apparently with nursing cats you feed them as much as they want. Has your neighbour taken them to a vet ? and what is she planning to do with them ?

I would be inclined to get the advice of a vet eg fleas will need to be treated as can cause a lot of problems to kittens. Have you got a local animal welfare charity near you - they would probably be able to help.

Thanks countingto10.
Went to see cat twice today and she didn't eat much - just had some milk and that dry cat stuff ... will visit again when DH comes home.

And, as it turns out, the cat isn't a stray as it had a beautiful emerald collar and is very well groomed. Hope she wasn't lost. Will have a chat with neighbour about trying to find her rightful owner.

I'd get mum and kitten checked by the vet.
The vet will also be able to check the mum for microchip identifier.

When I found an injured cat I put posters up round the area I found her and the owners called that night.

cat and kitten are doing very well.
when neighbour gets back will talk to her about putting some posters up to reunite her with owner.
