.. how do you keep them from being bored senseless when it's raining and you can't put them in their run?

I had both a rabbit and a guinea pig, (neither of which had much sense to be bored out of to start with) but they did keep each other entertained in a limited kind of way, mostly by trying to sit on each other. It looked like that game kids play where they put their hands in a pile & then pull the bottom one out & put it on top etc. Except that when the rabbit was on top, you couldn't see the guinea pig because of the rabbit's fluff.

They also entertained themselves by eating from opposite ends of the same dandelion leaf & seeing who got to the middle first and by general bouncing and squeaking.
Oh, and there was a cat which preserved them from boredom by coming round every so often and smirking at them through the wire - they were scared and/or angry but they weren't bored.

I'm told you can entertain small animals by putting balls & similar toys in the hutch, but my two just ate them....

Watching this one with interest ... considering moving our gps from basement to sitting room because they seem so bored in their cage today ...at least that way they can interact with us a bit more ....

I do let them run around on the floor a bit (have bought one of those fleece tunnel things that they like to hide in) .. and they generally 'lift their heads and/or squeak' if they want to pee or poo, so that's the signal to return them to their cage ...

I also hang up a few treats in their cages (hard foods/fresh foods such as broccoli stalks) and make sure they have fresh hay morning and evenign. I give them quite a bit and they run through it and over it and under it which is quite sweet to watch ..

They quite like playing around in half a hollowed out melon skin as well.

Other than that, I'm stumped .... although I have heard of people sticking cardboard boxes together (then cutting holes in the 'walls') to give them indoor 'rat' runs, apparently they quite like that . Not sure how cardboard stands up to copious weeing though.

BTW Rusty Bear, I'm no expert, but I didn't think it was advised to keep rabbits and gps together any more ....somethign to do with bullying apparently ... yours sound as if they are firm friends though...!!

Mine get quite unreasonably excited by hay.

Even I demand more excitement from life than a guinea pig.

My bunny goes outside and has a free run of the garden [it's pretty secure - I hope!] so he goes out for a few hours and doesn't seem to mind the rain. He will happily sit out in it unless it's bucketing down, when he goes under a bush. If he's in his run on the grass he has an upturned pet carrier which he uses for shelter and he is equally happy with this arrangement, though he'd rather be eating my plants!

My rabbit also has the free run of the garden, from 7am until 7pm. He really is spoilt! Put your rabbit in it's run with a cover over one part of it. It's seems a bit unfair to keep it locked up all day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/09/2008 15:36

I cover the run so they can go out unless its tipping. They seem happy.

RustyBear · 30/09/2008 16:25

Well,Countingthe grey hairs, they may still be firm friends if bunny heaven & guinea pig heaven are in the same place....

When we bought them, the pet shop owner put them in the same cage for a week before we picked them up to check they got on ok - the guinea pig was definitely the boss, but she managed to rule the roost without any fighting.

We had a run with a covered place at each end & they used to go out in most weathers - in fact the rabbit used to sit out in the rain quite often.

cheesesarnie · 30/09/2008 16:26

my rabbit is indoors so she runs around house happy as can be

cornsilk · 30/09/2008 16:28

mine is also indoors - he loves it!

2sugars · 01/10/2008 05:32

Can't do indoors as have two Springer spaniels who would regard them as toys

Our run is partly covered - I thought both guinea pigs and rabbits were suseptable to colds if you put them on wet grass though?

So what do the wild rabbits do if they can't go on wet grass?

Countingthegreyhairs · 01/10/2008 10:37

Wild rabbits presumbably hide in burrows when it's very wet, but I'm sure light rain wouldn't bother them.. not sure about gps but the books say they are susceptible to damp ... but their fur defininitely growsthicker if you keep them outside or put them outside regularly

....I put mine in a run, part of which has wooden flooring and a roof .. and they are quite cozy if you provide lots of hay and can get out of a heavy shower. Trouble is, it's been raining from morning to night for two days here so mine are stuck indoors currently.

Cornsilk - does your house rabbit chew the electrical wires?? If so, how do you prevent that?

Rustybear - I like the sound of guinea pig & rabbit heaven - would quite fancy it myself
