when I either get out of car or leave her tied up and walk away . I always end up coming back to sshhh her which I know is what she wants but I feel self concious of her noise for the sake of other people.

In theory you should try to carch her not barking for a moment and praise her like made. You would probably need to lurk round the corner intead of really going away and have to spend some time on the training. I have also read that you can teach them to bark by saying 'bark' when they are barking, then you can teach them not to. Is she really insecure when you go? I have also read that leaving something of yours can help. But surely the car is yours. I now have a dog which does the same - border collie, needy dogs. My last dog, a terrier, never did. I have read all the theories but never have the mental energy to do the training. Tell me if something works!

Just yell a hefty "NO!" when they do it when you don't want to

Takes a few times, but they soon get the message.

My mum's dogs bark on demand, twice when the front door bell goes, once to be let in from the garden and very rarely otherwise.... all from training

I can get my mum's dog to bark a sequence of barks and then stop with a "no" - DS thinks she can count

"when you don't want THEM to BARK" I meant

Coordinate verbal instructions with an anti barking collar - my Mum's dog has one and every time she goes to bark the collar makes a high pitched noise. It's unpleasant for Tilly but we can't hear it. Seems to work a treat.

we tried an anti-bark collar on our last dog and it didn't help at all. Don't suppose he could hear it over his own barking!

Yelling No or 'shut up' doesn't work however many times DH tries it - sometimes telling the dog to do something else that it does understand can pause the bark ( eg when we come in, and dog goes wild, telling him to Sit is much more effective than 'shut up!'

dont yell! get a spray collar.
