Cannot believe that anyone would buy a pedigree dog after watching this programme, felt physically sick when the rhodesian rhidgeback breeder complained that a 'young' vet wouldnt put sown a peferectly healthy puppy because it didnt have a ridge of hair growing the wrong way up its back . or am i a big wuss ?

Yes Romy exceptions/will/may etc!!
I do think the programme was a bit sensationlist, I expect they also looked into some breeds and breeders and found some very responsible breeders and breed clubs, but I imagine these didn't make such good TV. But it did open my eyes to those that don't seem at all concerned about the health of the breed and were very focused on breed standards and making money from champion dogs puppies. And the horrific illnesses that some breeds are prone to which was upseting to see. I think it should just reiterate how important it is to research a breed and breeders if you want to buy a good pedigree dog, and that crossbreeds have benefits too!
And like others have said perhaps the designer dogs such as labradoodles, cokerpoos etc are really pretty good for the dog world.

I've just got a pedigree lab, from show lines, but he's from a very responsible breeder who has all the health checks done on her dogs. And she doesn't interbreed them!
I do think that in general if you get a dog that looks like a dog, rather than the obviously quite distorted breeds which are out there, you are less likely to have problems (I used to be a vet nurse so I've seen the problems first hand).
I also think that, sadly, where there is money concerned there will always be people willing to sacrifice the animals welfare for monetary ends.
Perhaps we ought to let dogs look like dogs - not 'cute' necessarily, but healthy.

I didn't see the programme, but saw reports on the news about this.

It's shocking, all this interbreeding is only going to get worse with the 'new' breeds that are supposedly 'in fashion'.

Both myself and my parents have Border Collies, my parents one is from a working sheep farm in Wales, so no papers ,and that doesn't bother them, cos he's lovely and so laid-back.

Ours was a rescue puppy, we don't know where from, but hes mainly white with only a few black patches on.When I took him to the vets for his jabs, the vet smiled and said obviously he didn't come from a breeder breeder as he would have been killed at birth due to his colouring.

Dogs should be dogs -not fashion accessories ,sadly that doesn't seem to be the case with some breeds at the moment.
