are there any DACHSHUND owners out there in Mumsnet world?

I LOVE animlas and would have a house full if I could but DH much more sensible than me and keeps me under control, but today we saw a Dachshund puppy and he kind of caved abit and said he wouldn't mind one.

I have looked at loads of websites and they seem to range in price from about £200 to £1000!! and I am not sure about Miniature and standard etc . I would like a dog I can walk and my mum has a dalmatian so I would like it to be able to play without being squashed!!
advice please...

dachhunds came first in a recent poll for most aggressive dog and my friend has one that is a nightmare so i would research well if you have kids.

I have no idea about the breed but when it comes to size, it really doesnt matter

My Chihuahua plays quite well with my IL's donkey sized Rotweiller!

My relatives had a dachshund but it was not good with children, very grumpy and snarly. I know someone else who had one that was not very good with children either. I would research carefully if you have children.

aww I love them, i go all goo goo if see one out and about. The miniature ones are cool. I had no idea they are agressive tho, is this true?

They say the same of Jack Russels, but thats not true, my mum had the softest one ever.

Dachs were bred for hunting tho, so maybe they have the reputation?

I have never heard they have a bad reputation. In fact, I know very little about the breed really. But the two I did know, completely unrelated to each other were definately not good pets for children.

oh thanks everyone ..I had heard they are a bit grumpy. I do have one dd ( 4) and 2 cats and I have found some breeders who say they have cats and the pups are socialised with kids etc but I will think about it and do some more research

We had two miniature wire-haired dachsunds when I was a child - the first one was lovely, but sadly damaged his back when he was quite young & had to be put down - I think they are quite prone to this, presumabmy because of their relatively long backs.
The second one was frankly grumpy & actually bit me once, for no reason that I could see (I was about 12 at the time).
They were both totally devoted to my mum, to the point where they would howl inconsolably if she went out.

ok well i am going to chip in here. my mil had one and he was the kindest sweetest dog you could ever meet. he never barked, he was loving, he was like a little old man. He used to sit under the pushchair when the little ones were small to protect them.
And so we got one. Billy is the softest daftest dog you could ever have. he is as soft as butter and sweet to go with it. He loves the children and again sits under a pushchair if he gets the chance. We were careful when we introduced him. we didnt have children but had a cat. So we made sure that he knew he was no.2 and not no.1. When the children were born he was introduced and he became no.3 then no.4. yes he barks at strangers (which is what we want) but tbh the only way he could disable them in any way was to either breath on them (stinky stinky dog breath) or love them to death.
If you train them properly they are fine which is the case with most dogs. We were always strict with him when he was little and its worked for us. He has a basket in the front room which he sits in, he is not allowed up on the furniture and his basic dog training skills are present. Please dont be put off.
I woudl however recommend that you go and find one via the kennel club. the look for daschund breeders. that way you know what you are getting.
Billy is a long haired minature daschund btw.

Well we have a miniature blac and tan-our second-and you could not wish to meet a soppier and more loving dog.He is very attatched to dd (age 3.5) and is her shadow.He also loves our 3 cats-sometimes too much.
He is a hound (loves sniffing and is a bit naucghty) as opposed to the terrier (hunting,snappy,killing mentality IMHO).
I was always used to big dogs and changed from aGreat Dane to our dacschubd-same personality just condensed into a small body.

He also uses a cat flap-very handy!

yes i should say that he adores the our cat too and will follow ds around all day given the chance. a very very loving and gentle dog

thanks ladies..thats what I wanted really someone who had one to say what they were REALLY like.
mts leroy ..your dog is lovely !!

I think like whoosh I would have a short haired though..what you said about the hound versus terrier bit makes sense too as I am wary of terreiers as they can disapear when out walking etc.

Can both your dogs do walks? If so how long for. I like to walk and wonder how long a Dachshund could walk for?

lol at the walks. well billy used to regularly outrun the labrador we used to have. he would be round and round him in circles and was waaaay faster. As for stamina because we have always walked him a lot he will literally walk him for miles , although I do pick him up,or put him in the bottom of the pushchair for a while as I dont always think its fair on him. He does however have other ideas and always wants to walk.
I know billy is long haired but he doesnt really shed that much tbh. we do trim him from time to time but really thats because we think he looks cute rather than him needing it.

oh thats a lovely offer leroy..we are in west sussex. My husband is waivering abit now because they are so expensive . I hadn't realised they would be QUITE so much. Will have to work on him this weekend

We have a dachshund. She is a black and tan standard size and is just over a year old.
She has the nicest temperament - is quite happy for my little nephew and neice to get in her basket with her and cuddle. We have 2 other dogs and I would trust her the most with children.

She is very obedient and intelligent but was harder to initially house train than my other dogs. She does bark quite alot - but this can be a good thing for security and tends to be a bit 'whiney' but I think that is a breed characteristic.

Oh and stamina wise she can out run our other dogs and when they are panting away she looks like she could go on for miles more.

They dig too - ours used to love the beach (this was back in the days when dogs were allowed on beaches) - we have an old photo showing just the tip of his tail in the hole he'd dug, but they would dig in anything soft. We always had to be quick in picking up the newspaper when it was delivered or it would be ripped to shreds by their front paws.
A friend of ours now has one who is just as bad - in fact he is called 'JCB'

Yes they do dig....if you have a croquet pich for a lawn then may not be the best dog-that sais,lots of dogs dig.
I agree with the others-stamina isn't a problem-they can go for miles and miles.
Mine is a wuss though and won't even consider a walk if it is raining.
