Dog lovers tell me about your dog?

I got mine a few weeks ago from a rescue centre and love him to bits I've always liked dogs but never been a huge animal lover. I'd promised the boys when we got a garden we'd get a dog. So when we moved to a house with a garden and a great park over the road I had to keep my promise.
So after visiting one rescue centre with no joy we went to another and got our 17 month old whippet?/collie cross.
He'd been sent back and on his information from ex-owner it said 1) he hated other dogs 2) he ran away if you let him off the lead 3) he hates the wind 4) he hates being bathed ....etc.

Well, yes he did hate dogs...barked like crazy and totally showed me up. But that lasted a week as I kept taking him to the park, let him off the lead eventually, and calmly got him to socialise. Now he thinks he owns the park
He's only run away once and that was when my bf walked him. I was in hospital and bf had to take him out and dog just ran off. Can you imagine me coming out and breaking it to me that my dog had gone?

Oh and he often goes out with me in gales plus is very compliant when I bathe him.

It makes me sad to think some people just can't give a dog a bit of patience. This dog really is fantastic. So clever and friendly. My kids adore him so does the exdh. He even has him overnight sometimes.

I'm glad though that he came to me in the end

We have a 14yo Springer called Max, and an 11 week old Springer (picture on profile). Just lovely, lovely dogs. Looking forward to next week when we can take Millie out without carrying her.

Would anyone say with absolute certainty it's necessary to keep them in for a week after their 2nd jab?

hertsnessex · 08/07/2008 15:54

We have a 5mth old BullMastiff. We have always had staffys but i fancied a change, and after 9mnths of looking we got Mutley!

He is lovely, a pain at times with his 'stroke me, play with me' thing (even though you have just spent the last hr doing just that!), but he is great!

MuffinMclay · 08/07/2008 16:14

My dog is a 5 year old springer, the most beautiful springer in the world. He is my pfb (despite not being my first dog).

He doesn't like other dogs (especially black ones), apart from King Charles spaniels. Loves people. Loves food.

Currently lying upside down on the sofa.

MuffinMclay · 08/07/2008 16:16

2sugars - he is beautiful! I'm sure we cracked before 12 weeks with the walking.

Jazzicatz · 08/07/2008 16:16

Muffin - your spaniel is not the most handsome - cos mine is.

Goober · 08/07/2008 16:19

Corolla.
White Boxer dog.
Very special lady.
You can see her on my profile.

wotulookinat · 08/07/2008 16:22

Goober she is gorgeous! Does she have skin problems, being all white?

northernrefugee39 · 08/07/2008 17:06

juniper, what a great thread. Your dog sounds gorgeous, and as if he's landed on his feet with good owners.
We have two rescues, a lurcher labrador and a recently aquired chatterdale from the RSPCA. A Patterdale chihuahua cross; the last one left from a litter of seven dumped at the RSPCA. The children had set their heart on one of his brothers but it had gone by the time we had had a home check. This one was in a back room "Not as sweet looking as the others"
He's gorgeous and fantastic nature.
The dogs there broke my heart. I could have taken loads....

Goober · 08/07/2008 18:20

Skin problems,
Eye problems,
Stomach problems,
Behavior problems and attitude problems,
But still a super-star.

IllegallyBrunette · 08/07/2008 18:28

Anyone got or had a shitzu ??

RusselBrussel · 08/07/2008 18:30

Dillon, one daft cocker spaniel (Daft Dill)
Chocolate brown - gorgeous. With tail, as daft as a brush, as mad as a box of frogs, as soft as a blanket, as cuddely as a bear.
He does not know he is a dog.
Fantastic with the children, good with other dogs, fave activity is lying on the rug with all four legs in the air snoozing.
Unable to play ball (either does not chase it or won't return it), falls over backwards when using hind paw to scratch behind ear, one giant cuddle monster.

Love him to bits, he is my best friend in dog form!

Goober · 08/07/2008 18:34

My brother in USA has 4 Shuitzus.
They are cute.

IllegallyBrunette · 08/07/2008 19:08

Are they good with kids Goober ??

hertsnessex · 08/07/2008 19:15

we were v close to getting a boxer - like the look of them etc, but didn't like the generally 'bounceyness' !!!!

although saying that mutley has had a v bouncy day - so much for the BM's calm nature!

Goober · 08/07/2008 19:15

Very.
He has rescued all of his, so you never know what you're going to get do you? They are incredibly gentle. We went over to stay with him 3 years ago, he only had 2 at the time and it was the 1st time they had been with kids (mine). My DD fell in love with them and visa versa.

Also, one of our neighbours is a child-minder and she has one too. She says the kids adore her.

Are you thinking of getting one?

bethoo · 08/07/2008 19:16

have a boxer , did have two but one of them died suddenly in feb of suspected heart problem.
my remaing one comes to work with me and everyone loves him. i think he prefers my neighbour to me as she puts gravy in his dry food!
he is well behaved until he sees a dog then tries to at all hard, his bark is worse than his bite especially due to gum problems.
but he is lovely.

hotcrossbunny · 08/07/2008 19:18

Big hairy floppy Otterhound. We rescued him nearly 10 years ago and he's utterly gorgeous, except when he's found the muddiest puddle to immerse himself in He's got a lovely nature, no problem with kids or other animals, but he does bark a bit. Sorry neighbours Anyone used one of those anti dog barking collar thingies????

Goober · 08/07/2008 19:19

bethoo.

My Boxer doesn't bark. At all. She loves men, all men and doesn't like me much.

IllegallyBrunette · 08/07/2008 19:20

Possibly Goober. Dd2 is absolutly desperate for a dog, and I think one would do her the world of good too.

I have accepted a full time college place for Sept though. So if I don't find a part time job before Sept, and do go back to college, I will have to forget about it until I finnish colege.

sophiewd · 08/07/2008 19:21

German cross English Pointer with a decent bit of foxhound in him, rescued from Ireland, found on internet picked up from Magor services, worth more in scrap metal now than the donation it cost us. Fine with tanks firing, thunder, fireworks and shooting, terrified of clicking biros. Has ishoos but we love him.

sophiewd · 08/07/2008 19:22

My lovely old choolate labrador who was fantastic with kids and so laid back was sadly put down last week. Is sorely missed.

brimfull · 08/07/2008 19:25

my 13 yr old beardie looks like this only more stupid looking.
she hasn't got long in this world and we are cherishing her last few months.

hertsnessex · 08/07/2008 19:26

I fell in love with a chocolate lab when one of my clients brought hers along to a meeting. He was gorgeous and super well behaved.

otterhounds are gorgeous!

sorry to hear of your loss sophiewd

xx

I've got an 8 year old Boxer called Molly, she's getting on unfortunately and keeps losing conciousness, the vet said that each episode will get longer and longer and then one day she won't come round...
Then we have a 4 year old Doberman called Ripley who is so boisterous we should have called her bounce and we've just got a Weimaraner called Diesel. She's 13 weeks old on Thursday and she absolutely rules the roost. Molly's not keen but Ripley is totally besotted with her.

beaniesteve · 08/07/2008 20:21

My dog came from the pound. We (ex and I ) had looked after a friends Jack russle when they moved to New York. I wasn't a dog person really, and had 3 cats so was wary about looking after him but Fell in love with him within days. Unfortunately he died suddenly so we decided to get our own dog.

We visited the pound and saw him in a cage with another dog which was jumping up and down peactically saying 'pick me, pick me' so we picked the other one because he was looking at us saying 'get me out of here, get me out of here'. He's a Border collie/corgi cross so basically a black and white shortarse. When we got him he was called 'Tazz' but we renamed him Devo. He was well trained and would sit, lie and stay and peed in the house as soon as we took him home. The cats hated him at first but before long they were all sleeping together on the bed.

He's basically the most amazing dog ever, we took him camping several times and he never escaped.

Sadly when me and my ex split up I lost custody or rather gave up fighting for him when my ex started using him to emotionallyblackmail me. I haven't seen him for a year.
