How would you hide 2 bunnies and a hutch for a week?

Want to get DS 2 bunnies for xmas from Easton Farm Park but we wouldnt be able to get them any later (probably) than the 23rd - how could we hide them til xmas morning? We do have a barn but I feel that would be cruel as there is no lighting out there so they would be in pitch black and we couldnt easily get out to spend time with them. We will be getting them as babies.

(and I know a dog is for life not just for Christmas!) we are very good pet owners we already have two heavily insured and spoiled cats.

We could put rabbits outside in the hutch but as I really want them to be indoor rabbits I dont know if I would want them outdoors in the winter.

Neighbour or relative who might?

bodiddly · 05/07/2008 21:25

do you have a neighbour that could take them in for you for a couple of days?

eenybeeny · 05/07/2008 21:31

well... we have a neighbour who will be out of town and we are looking after her house for her... but she is REALLY stuffy and not sure she would like any rabbits in her house not for any logical reason but just because she is so set in her ways she hates anything off the beaten path.

eenybeeny, if they are babies then you're usually advised to keep them indoors when you first get them. (ie, in a barn/shed/outhouse)

I would pop them in your barn if you can get them on the 23rd. just make sure you can get out there to open the door now and then for a bit of light? or could you rig up some lighting somehow?
you'll have to go out to feed them etc anyway

eenybeeny · 05/07/2008 21:42

looks like we can get them on the 23rd - we would get home around 5 or 6 that night. Then they would have to stay in the barn (or elsewhere) until DS went to sleep on the 24th at which point we would bring them in and put them under the tree.

I just hate the idea of leaving them in the dark. I agree they should not be left outside.

that's not too bad though, only 24 hrs.
does the neighbour have a shed or anything that has any more light in it?

eenybeeny · 05/07/2008 21:46

anyone know how to integrate new bunnies with old cats?

eenybeeny · 05/07/2008 21:47

no, but she does have a spare room

I think the barn would be fine for that amount of time, I really do.

They'll just snuggle up and sleep.

eenybeeny · 05/07/2008 22:06

really? you dont think they would mind being in the dark?

OP posts:
colditz · 05/07/2008 22:07

At that age I would not have thought t hey would be going outside anyway

eenybeeny · 05/07/2008 22:11

does the barn count as outside?? I might be able to keep them at my neighbours but I am not sure. And I would prefer they were in our own home... I dont know... I just dont want to give them to DS early as I am thrilled he finally understands who Father Christmas is and I want to keep the magic going! I will try to get them in my neighbours house for the day. What about integrating them with my cats?

No, I think the dark would be fine for a short time. Think of a deep warm burrow on a foul winter's day.

cadelaide · 05/07/2008 22:22

Why is your barn so dark, btw?

Barns usually have at least a few nooks and crannies where the light seeps in.

eenybeeny · 05/07/2008 22:22

very true cadelaide! I am trying to think of a way to get some light in there anyway. But there is no electricity.

how about a solar torch, or wind up torch on for a bit for some light?
think they will be fine anyway tbh

eenybeeny · 05/07/2008 22:35

I will look into the torch idea! Are they expensive I cant off the top of my head picture what one looks like.

Re: the Bunnies & Cats bit.
Check out the Feline Advisory Bureau, they normally have loads of advice on everything. A kittening pen would probably be a good idea.

thanks Bowddee been looking at their site!
