Does this sound like just furballs? My poor cat. [sad]

Since yesterday my cat has been choking and being sick all the time - many times in the night, again this morning. If she tries to miaouw she just chokes, she can't purr. She's obviously hungry, but swallows a bit of food and then chokes it back up again.

She looks miserable She's looking all mournful and uncomfortable.

Get to the vets!

forevercleaning · 02/07/2008 10:50

could be a furball, they can take a while to come up,maybe get her checked out later if it has not arrived on the carpet today.

Brangelina · 02/07/2008 10:52

I'd go to the vet's, one of my cats ahd this and it turned out to be a bone from a bird she caught that had got stuck in her throat.

Of course it could just be a firball but I'm sure she'd have sicked it up by now. 24hrs is a very long time.

Brangelina · 02/07/2008 10:52

furball

Boco · 02/07/2008 10:57

I've just called the vets and got an appointment for tonight. Hope it's just a furball.

I will never forget the sight of your cat projectile vomiting across the garden.

I'm retching now just thinking about it.

Boco · 02/07/2008 10:59

My house and garden is covered now! Is vile. Worse than child sick.

This doesnt sound like furballs, take her to the vets today please, if she has a blockage it can be fatal, quickly. Ah, i see you have an appointment. Do keep an eye on her if she is still retching especially if she is not passing any feaces get her there earlier if you can. Also, don't feed her today in case she needs sedating for x rays.Offer plenty of water though.

It could be that something is irritating her throat, it could be furballs but i really think a vet needs to take a look.

girlandboy · 02/07/2008 18:43

Have you been to the vets yet?????????

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/07/2008 18:55

might be a bit of grass ? is she wheezy ? hope all ok

Boco · 02/07/2008 19:00

Hello, yes, been to the vets. She has a wheeze, she's not keeping down food, and has a high temperature.

Bit confused by vet, who thought obstruction, but then when saw how high her temp was, thought gastric infection. But there's definitely a problem in her throat rather than tummy as she's choking and wheezing and doing this weird thing where she has her head on one side sort of gagging.

Vet gave her antibiotic injection and told us to come back in the morning and if she's not better she'll have anaesthetic and x-ray.

This is going to cost a fortune - which we don't have so rather worried about that. (but obviously more worried about Stella)

my cat had similar wheeziness and it turned out to be a blade of grass she'd eaten caught in her larynx

Boco · 02/07/2008 19:33

Did she have a temperature?
Did the vet have to do anything or did it come out on its own?

hope she is ok BOco - if your vet is reasonable they will allow you to pay in installments, it is best to flag this up with the receptionist before treatment though. Its not unusual, vet treatment is expensive and its really awkward for lots of people. They wont mind im sure.

lucyellensmum · 02/07/2008 19:35

has the head tilt been since you went to the vets or did the vet see this?

Boco · 02/07/2008 19:39

The head tilt was before but I told her about it.

can't remember about temp (was a long time ago) but she had to stay in to have grass removed

lucyellensmum · 03/07/2008 16:33

how is your cat today boco?

Spidermama · 03/07/2008 16:35

MIne was sick last night and spent all of yesterday, absolutely all of it, asleep in the laundry basket.

Let us know how it goes boco. I hope she's feeling a bit better.

Boco · 03/07/2008 16:57

This morning dp told me that he'd given her some chicken and she'd managed to eat.

I did and asked WHY he'd fed her, when she was having anaesthetic and x-ray in an hour. He'd forgotten that he wasn't supposed to feed her, so had to cancel appointment. She's much better now though - she's eating and drinking and not being sick, but obviously got a very sore throat, you can see her doing exaggerated swallowing and her miaow is really hoarse. She's on her back writhing in the sun in a happy way though, so hopefully the antibiotics kicked in and she'll be alright.

Phew.

bloody men - lol.

I would ring the vets in the morning though as the injection will only last 48hrs. May need a full course - hope she continues to recover.
