My cat has just been quite baddly attack by next doors god awful cat and she has a cut on her paw where he bit her. Is there anything I can put on it to stop it becoming an abcess.

Only 2 weeks ago the little fecker attacked mu other cat and it ended up costing me £60 in vets bills, when the bite turned into an abcess.

Not sure what to do to stop this happening again. I know cats fight and mine are definately a bit "street" themselves but this little shite is a nasty bugger.

clean at regular intervals with warm salty water and cotton wool, before now i have even used savlon and germolene on my cats before shelling out money at the vets - 80% of the time my 'remidies' have worked well

Yes, definitely salt water and cottonwool bathing. I'd be a bit wary of ointments unless you know for sure they're O.K. for cats, they do tend to keep licking their wounds and could ingest something harmful. Take note of how it is healing, if it becomes hot and smelly/oozing green pus, you may have to go to vets.

I know how awful some cats can be fighting, my old cat was attacked by a renowned aggressive cat, fortunately he wasn't hurt but was very shaken and had a lot of fur pulled out. I managed to stop it quickly. A few weeks later the bully cat was run over and died. (Not by me though!)

Def don't use ointments. Some have Phenol compounds in them & cats are allergic to these. Salt water bathing the best thing you can do. But unfortunately cats mouth are dirty things, and sometimes a trip to the vets is inevitable.....
Is your neighbours cat neutered??

ConnorTraceptive · 01/07/2008 20:44

Thanks for the advice will keep on bathing it with salt water and hope for the best.

Not sure if the little shit poppet is neutered or not. He was up until quite recently a house cat so I suspect the new found freedom has gone to his head

i would ring the vet to be honest, the best way to avoid an abscess if infection is present is antibiotics. If not, clean the area with salt water but make sure you dry it, and also pick off any scab that forms as this will lock in any bacteria in an air free environtment - bug heaven. Is the wound on the front paw - cos if it is, whe wasn;t running away! . Just watch her, if she goes lame then take her to the vets. Is she up to date with her vaccinations?

It may be a cheaper option to see the vet now than wait though - personally I wouldn't advise waiting until it flares up.

Do you have pet insurance?

ConnorTraceptive · 01/07/2008 22:03

No it was her back paw - he really beat the crap out of her - they were a couple of gardens down and she was screeching and howling for ages

I will take her to the vet tomorrow as she is limping. Don't have pet insurance but then other than vaccinations they've never been to the vets before this and they are five years old.

Tis not too late to get them insured! I got mine done at 11 yrs old - really needed it a few years on as he became diabetic. Is almost always worth having
