Has anyone had actual experience of owning pitbull crosses?

I have changed my name for this.

An acquaintance rescused a dog which was to be drowned for being the "wrong colour". The dog is a greyhound crossed with a pitbull terrier. They are apparently used for hunting, but her colour makes her "useless" by accounts and he saved her from the bucket of water which was to be her fate.

Through the most ridiculous of circumstances, and I do mean really properly ridiculous, it seems probable that we are going to be looking after her for a while, if not giving her a permanent home. She is the most lovely dog, slightly skitty, but adoring and easy to control. She has taken to me and follows me everywhere.

I am experienced with bull terriers, but I am aware of the rep that pit bulls have and have no experience with the breed. To put my postion into context I know that if I asked here about Staffordshire Bull Terriers and children I would have a barrage of "anti" posts, which I disagree with, wholeheartedly.

Has anyone any actual experience? And, yes, I do know they are a banned breed and have been for years. I have never actually "met" one before, and she is a just a sweet skitty darling. Probably far more greyhound than anything else, but I knew the first time I clapped eyes on her that she had bull terrier in her. I was shocked to find out which one.

Thanks.

Thanks Wigparty - I appreciate that. So, similar to any other dog then, in that if you are consistently firm and discourage any unwanted behaviours you should have a nice dog. I suspected as much, but am aware of the unpredictable nature the breed had become known for.

Dog fighting is foul and the people who participate should have a very sticky fate. They are disgusting.

I don't see what's funny about a greyhound and yorkie cross - so long as one of them had brought along an orange box they should be ok!!

No problem! I'm not an expert/professional though, just a staffie cross owner, and it sounds like there is a range of different opinions on this. I think you'll be the best judge of her as you know her. I'd be tempted to treat her like any other cross breed unless anything concerns you.

good luck!

(I mean't greyhound crossing a yorkie in the sense of coming across one in the park and thinking it's a rabbit! I think that's why purebreed greyhounds have to be muzzled when out, or am I wrong? Perhaps it's just ex-racers? muse, muse ... )

Not read the entire thread but who told you she's a pitbull cross? Too many people say pitbull when actually the dog is a staffy X.

I'd take her to a vet and ask their opinion on the X breeding in the first instance. Someone who is qualified and not someone who just passes comment on something they may be have no idea on. It's similar to the number of people who think they know the difference between a Rottie and a Dobermann or a English Springer Spaniel and a Cocker Spaniel

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Sorry that should have been people not knowing the difference between certain breeds and just passing comment.
