Am I overreacting about leaving a dog in the car?

My partner and myself and his 9 yr old border collie are on holiday in the highlands in his holiday home. We have just fallen out because, although it isn’t as hot as in the south it is 21/23 degs. He wants to go 50mins drive to a shopping centre (no dogs allowed) and leave him in the car, will be at least 2/3 hours with window open about 3 inches. I have refused this for obvious reasons, and he says if dog can’t come we aren’t which I am ok with. But he just cannot see and I have sent him what I found online about leaving dogs in cars. We are well over pension age if this is relevant. Fuming !!!

Your partner is an idiot. Never mind the risk to the dog, he's asking to have the car windows smashed by a concerned member of the public.

bluescarf · 13/08/2026 11:29

You are not overreacting. You cannot leave a dog g in a car for 3 hours. You’ll most probably find a crowd, the police and your window smashed when you return to the car!

BurntBroccoli · 13/08/2026 11:29

21/23 outside is MUCH hotter inside a car. Poor dog. If I saw this I would call the fire service to come and break the glass.

Pinkgin00 · 13/08/2026 11:31

Leaving a dog in a car on it's own for 3 hours is cruel anyway IMO, nevermind planning to do it when it is hot.

TheEntitlement · 13/08/2026 11:37

Tell him to do a trial run.
Get him to put a nice thick fleece, woolly hat and socks, with nice thick trousers and sit in the car for 3 hours with the window open a crack.

If he still thinks it's a good idea after trying it out, remove the dog from his care and seriously rethink your relationship.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 13/08/2026 11:45

Just think hoe hot your car is when ypu get in,before you turn your air conditioning on.

I believed the the rise in dogs in inappropriate places was due to people understanding that you cant just leave one in a car etc when they are inconvenient.

GaaNeen · 13/08/2026 11:47

Wow !
he is an arse

purplecorkheart · 13/08/2026 11:48

Of course you are totally correct. Poor dog I doubt this is the first time that your partner thought it was a good idea to leave the dog in the car in the heat. He sounds like an idiot.

Tel12 · 13/08/2026 11:51

Your partner is very cruel to even consider this to be ok, let alone the heat factor which could either distress or even kill your dog.

YorksMa · 13/08/2026 11:56

Absolutely not! He's putting the dogs' lives at serious risk in that kind of weather. Passers-by can call the police if they feel the dogs are in distress and if police aren't able to attend the law supports breaking windows to save the dogs. Ask him if this sounds like a fun trip out.

Lomonald · 13/08/2026 12:00

Surely not being able to do what you want is the downside of taking your dog on holiday? Of course he can't leave it in a hot van. What does your husband need from the shopping centre can't he go on his own.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 13/08/2026 12:21

Why is he your partner?

He's clearly a bit thick and not an animal lover and a big man child to boot.

Does he have any redeeming qualities?!

Advocodo · 13/08/2026 12:23

DO NOT LEVE YOUR DOG IN THE CAR! YOUR ORTNER IS AN IDIOT!!!!

Shedmistress · 13/08/2026 12:23

Absolutely fucking no fucking way.

This is your answer

Dunnocantthinkofone · 13/08/2026 12:34

You appear to have landed yourself with a spectacularly thick boyfriend!

No it is obviously not even remotely ok
Stupid prat!

Peonies12 · 13/08/2026 12:54

You are completely correct. Whatever the weather, 3 hours in a car is mean to a dog. I wouldn't leave a dog for any length of time in this weather.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 13/08/2026 12:57

Ask him if he wants a dead dog. I'm assuming the answer would be no.

Wallywobbles · 13/08/2026 13:02

Sit him in the car with the window open a crack parked on tarmac and see how he feels after an hour or so if he’s not dead from stubbornness.

PrancingPanda · 13/08/2026 13:12

A strong chance someone would report it, seeing a dog trapped in a hot car. At least I'd hope so.
There's a petition going at the moment- can't find it at the moment sorry.

Perhaps your DP would like to try sitting in a hot car, with a hooded fur coat, buttoned up to the neck, no air-con, with a window open for 3 inches, for 2-3 hours and report back to you??
Awful

PrancingPanda · 13/08/2026 13:13

Oops missed @TheEntitlement 's post whilst searching for the petition
But I totally agree

Gardenisablooming · 13/08/2026 13:19

I seriously hope you are reconsidering the relationship..
Keep the ddog.

WellThatIsABitMad · 13/08/2026 13:23

Can’t the dog be left in the holiday home - you say it’s his holiday home? Presuming it’s not a campervan, but an actual cottage or static caravan, the dog will be better in there presuming it can be kept cooler.

Lomonald · 13/08/2026 13:25

I don't know why I thought you were in a camper van ! Just leave the dog at home.
