Pyometra - very scared and need your positive experiences

Please share your positive experiences of your dog beating pyometra. My 9 year old cockapoo was diagnosed yesterday morning but they can't operate until tomorrow morning and I'm breaking my heart about her. Any positivity to help us through would be appreciated 😥

I’m assuming she’s at the vets on IV antibiotics? My friends dog had this and was operated on after about 48 hours on antibiotics, and is now fine.

Vet here. I'd call another local clinic and have them operate now/very soon, assuming she's stable. It is quite odd they're waiting 2 days as she could get very sick in this time. The uterus can rupture and toxin build up can cause acute kidney failure.

If they're waiting it's probably an open pyo which is draining (there will be pus if you apply pressure to her nethers) and not as dangerous but still requires prompt surgery. My 10yo went in for an open pyo and was just fine, it will probably be fine if the dog is in decent health 💐

Yes it is open - they gave her a high dose antibiotic injection and pain relief yesterday then sent her home to come back for surgery first thing Monday morning. That is reassuring about your dog - can I ask how soon your vet operated after diagnosis? Thank you x

My lovely Cav (who is no longer with us having died of natural causes a few years ago, at the age of 12), developed pyo and made a fully recovery.

(We had attempted to have her spayed when she was about a year old, but there were complications and the pyo infection came on before the second scheduled attempt could take place).

Our vet wasted no time at all though, and did emergency surgery. I didn’t think it was typically something a vet would wait around with?

Well she's away for her operation this morning. Poor thing. Praying that all is OK 🙏

Hope she’s home with you soon.

Hope your dog is okay, mine was operated on around 36h later and was just moping around. One thing that scared us was after her pyo spay she started spotting a decent amount which I haven't experienced with a regular spay and I thought something had gone wrong during the surgery but it was just blood vessels or something routine like that.

This is good to know - I haven't noticed any spotting though she has been leaking a little urine after she pees but I'm putting that down to just having had major surgery in that area. I can't actually believe the difference in her already. She's getting her appetite back - although will only eat chicken. It's horrifying how much weight she's lost. But she's back to following me around and wagging her tail which is amazing. Your dog must have had open pyometra too then - I hope she made a full recovery. It really is an awful illness. I'm so thankful my girl is over the worse seems to be on the mend. Thanks for the well wishes and advice to all ❤️
