What would YOU do about this 'abandoned' cat?

Our neighbours moved four roads down from me at the end of May. Tenants moved in. They took their outdoor cat with them, but five times now, his cat has made his way back to our garden and lives and sleeps in our garden. We have texted his owner multiple times to make him aware/collect him, but he always shows indifference, though he has collected him four times in the last 7 weeks. We have been feeding/watering his cat each time he reappears, but he pounces on our own cat causing our cat to retreat inside and our cat gets nervous about going into his own garden. His owner has told me to (his cat) 'shoo him away' and 'don't feed him'. However, I cannot let his cat starve in our garden where he chooses to 'live'. I have been in contact with five animal charities and not one of them can step in to help. The RSPCA said, 'Unless the cat is injured or emaciated, we can't help and we can't tell you whether to feed a neighbour's cat or not'.

I texted the cat's owner once more to ask him to collect his cat and told him I am feeding him as it's the humane thing to do. I received this reply, "Good morning. We will collect him tomorrow. This be the last time we do so. Stop feeding my cat, you are inviting him to stay there and then complaining that he is a nuisance. I will reiterate that he is an outdoor cat and has a large territory and knows how to get back home".

I simply don't know what to do. He came to collect him again yesterday (for the last time like he said) and once again, his cat has travelled up to my back garden again and is staying put in our garden. What do I do? Shall I continue to feed him or not?

This is exactly how my mum lost her cat although she hadnt moved house. She was absolutely heartbroken. It was because someone kept feeding it. Dont feed other peoples cats!!! My mum was heartbroken. I'm completely with the owner and dont think anything he has said has been unreasonable. Agree with previous posters that you caused this problem.

Also, the cat was never abandoned!!

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/07/2026 18:53

This is absolutely your fault OP. The cat isn’t going to starve. He’s an outdoor cat. You feeding him is the problem. Don’t feed him. Shoo him out every time he appears. The owner is right. Nobody should feed other people’s animals.

Whilst I agree that you should stop feeding him the problem is that this cat has never been shut in at his new home because IIRC he was originally left at the old house when the owner moved and therefore despite it only being 4 roads away he likely doesn’t know where it is on his own and will keep just coming back . Presumably if you stop feeding him he will eventually move on but I doubt he will go home .

I’m not surprised the owner is annoyed. Stop feeding other people’s cats!!!

" We have been feeding/watering his cat each time he reappears, but he pounces on our own cat causing our cat to retreat inside and our cat gets nervous about going into his own garden. "
So your 'kindness' to this cat is actually cruelty to your own?

  1. Stop feeding this cat
  2. Buy a Supersoaker water pistol and shoot him every time he pounces on your cat. The water does not hurt him, but he then has to spend time grooming it out of his fur and he's going to learn how not to be shot - either by not pouncing or relocating. It's a win-win. (Ex cat owner here- had to do it myself.)

Stop feeding the cat and tell your mum not to be daft. The text was perfectly polite and they must be absolutely at the end of their tether with your ridiculous behaviour. The cat is fine. Leave out water if you want but stop mithering your ex neighbours to collect it, leave the charities alone and squirt it with a water pistol if it's annoying your cat.

Stop feeding it ffs

TheWildZebra · 26/07/2026 19:16

This must be the dumbest shit I’ve heard all week

BillieWiper · 26/07/2026 19:26

Stop feeding him. The owner says he can find his way home so you should believe him. The cat is only staying in your garden because you're feeding him. He will go somewhere else for food if you stop. Be that home or another house.

Either feed him and take him on as your own or don't but stop contacting the owner.

Thanks guys. I'll use our water pistol on him if need be.
