How does one go about finding a kitten?

I would like to get one in early August
I specifically need one raised with dogs so it doesn't have a heart attack when confronted with my Ridgeback!

I love Ridgebacks and covet one

I fear it would bully my poor old labrador though

Ummm cats protection league?

micci25 · 24/06/2008 13:38

rehoming centers, ads in vets, free ad mag

CountessDracula · 24/06/2008 13:38

oh really?
mine is on my profile I think

She is 7 and a massive wuss so not worried for the kitten really but I wouldn't want to traumatise it.

if you come past our hosue youll find ours
he has been returned by neighbours 4 times this week!

CountessDracula · 24/06/2008 13:38

And how do you know what sort of kitten it is

I don't want an anti-social one for eg

you take pot luck.
cuagust is not kiten season really

CountessDracula · 24/06/2008 13:39

One of our neighs tried to get from a re-homing centre

Tehy were told they couldn't have one as they lived on a road
So that rules out most of London for starters!

Cats protection is a good place to start, but they will want to assess your home first. For personality it is hard to tell if you are getting a kitten. Maybe a bit easier if you go for an older cat with a more established personality.
If a cat is antisocial though, it is usually a result of how they have been treated, so if you do get a kitten then by handling it a lot you should be OK.

CD have you tried Battersea Dogs' Home (I know you said you'd looked at some rehoming places)? Dsis got a kitten from there ans she's on a main road.

kiddiz · 24/06/2008 14:19

Got my 4 month old kittten from the rspca. We were asked for a donation of £25 but she came microchipped, vaccinated and with a voucher to get her spayed, so blummin good value. We had to have our home checked but no probs and we live on a busy road although we do have quite a long front garden.
Re personalities it's quite hard to judge. She was very friendly and affectionate when we got her but changed quite dramatically when she was spayed. She's 6 now and although not aggressive at all she is distinctly antisocial! Doesn't like being picked up at all, but doesn't mind being stroked when she's in the mood and will spend ages grooming anyone who will let her wash them! On the whole she generally prefers to be left alone...sleeps all day and is in and out all night through ds's bedroom window hunting allsorts of wildlife which she kindly leaves in lines on the path for me to find in the morning.!!!

GrapefruitMoon · 24/06/2008 14:20

I was also told we couldn't have one from the rescue place because of our postcode....

Have just seen an ad for some in a local shop and have reserved one... am now worrying what to do with it when we go away during the holidays - obviously will have someone in to feed it but I'm worried it will still be very young and lonely...

sitdownpleasegeorge · 24/06/2008 14:35

You are going to need a cat carrier for trips to the vets so I'd recommend you buy one at the same time as you acquire the kitten because they make a great retreat for when they arrive at your home.

They usually bolt to an inaccessible corner but if you put the cat box somewhere quiet and just leave the door open, wait and watch, they can come out gradually and skitter back in anytime they need to retreat.

Site it near, but not right next to, the litter tray if possible.

CountessDracula · 24/06/2008 14:47

Grapefruitmoon that is why we are waiting til August as we will be back from our hols

We got Phsyco Kitty from Local Animal Sanctuary 3 weeks ago. She is 11 weeks now and the DC's are terrified of her! DC's are 4 and 9!

Phsyco Kitty hides behind walls and doors and waits for them to come past and then jumps out at them - DC's scream and run! Tis very funny! Phsyco Kitty is very very lively and is very playful, but has very sharp teeth and claws!

SHe loves me to bits but gets very annoyed if I try and do anything on computer or watch TV when she wants my attention and will dive at me and bite me to make me play.

I love Phsyco Kitty - she is so much fun!

When we are out during the day she is in a hUUUUGGGEEEE dog cage with bed, litter tray and water, so she can not hurt herself - she is fond of chewing anything and am worried she will eat something and hurt herself. She also sleeps in cage during night. It is for a newfounland so it is very very big.
