We are with Petplan, and so far, with an 18 week old puppy, they are going to be paying out over £2,500. He broke his 4 metatrsils.
Petplan was the one advertised int eh vets, however, the policy we have only pays out for the first 12 months of any ongoing treatment, so if pup got say diabetes, then tehyw ould only pay for 12 months.
Most of the pet insurers I looked at were the same. Does your policy pay out for long term treatment? Do you ahve a yearly limit on how much they will pay, i.e this policy will pay up to £4000(we are over half way there already)

i have petplan - costing us £42/month. this pays out for ongoing treatments - max of £4k/yr but does not limit the conditions per year.

so if my dog has an ongoing health problem that needs treatment for life they will cover it every year to a max of £4k. check which policy you have.

some policies wont pay out if for e.g. my dog gets a joint problem, they will pay it in the first year, but wont in the following yrs as it is a known condition. thats why i went for lifetime cover.

i'm with kennel club. costs £33 per month. also lifetime cover.

as herts said, that's a really important point.

micci25 · 24/06/2008 10:13

healthy pet, i think. was much cheaper than £42/pm and also pays for ongoing treatmenst upto £4000 annually.

i switched from another insurer after dp thought he saw the dog have a fit just incase she had epilepsy we needed her covered for life. she has been fine since but best to be safe.

hertsnessex · 24/06/2008 10:15

also, what you pay depends on breed - we have a bullmastiff so premiums are going to be higher for us as they can have health problems.

1st dog with Direct Line, who have just stopped paying out for her heart meds after one year. As I'm now going to haved to pay out £30 a month for her tablets I'm cancelling her insurance which has gone up to £28 per month.

Second dog is insured with sainsbugs, specifically because they don't impose the one year limit. I think they do have a limit of £4000 per condition tho'

BigBadMouse · 24/06/2008 10:23

Direct Line but for my cat. I used to have Petplan for my dogs (Great Dane and Great Dane Ridgeback cross) but it was incredibly expensive and got very similar cover elsewhere for less.

Direct Line are OK but they have an irritiating habit of whacking your premiums up each year and hoping you don't notice - if you phone up and complain they put it down again (I'm paying less this year than last)

Thanks for replies, I posted this just before I went to work. So if I look at some other companies, or check my own policy, I should be able to get lifetime cover for any illness. I just feel that we are already £2,500 towards the 4,000 yearly limit,a nd owrry if he needs another operation done in say 4-6 months

I'm with Healthy Pets, here - I think it covers ongoing conditions. Our dog is a crossbreed large dog, and it's only £9.22 per month. Before that we had More Than pet insurance, I think they do ongoing cover too.

Hi i have my 2 dogs insured with more than www.pet-insurance4you.co.uk Get 15% off when you apply for pet insurance online. Up to £7,000 cover for every new accident or illness your pet may have. No time limit to spending the vet fees, although i did not have my old dog insured and she has just disslocated her hip, first visit to the vets was £470.00 shes got to go back for x rays and if successful maybe another £200. if hip has not healed then vet said they will have operate again. Think i need to look for a loan.

morethanyoubargainfor · 24/06/2008 16:14

we have ours with direct line, and i took out the policy that doesn't have a time limit on it, so they pay per condition up to £6000, it costs us £28 per month, and have already claimed on it and they are good payers, our dog is 8 months old and he broke his knee when he was 12 weeks and needed lots of surgery.

saltire · 24/06/2008 16:18

Thanks.
Those of you who have had to make a claim, did your vet claim direct? Or did you need to pay upfront, then get the money back from insurers?

OP posts:
morethanyoubargainfor · 24/06/2008 16:24

we opted for both, our normal vets we paid for up front but the specialists and the hydro pool claimed directly, we found it easier that way. Our vet would have claimed directly if we wanted him to.

hertsnessex · 24/06/2008 18:14

just checked and even with 'healthy pets' its still £41.11/month for the gold cover.

Tiggiwinkle · 24/06/2008 18:20

Tesco do a "lifetime" cover-I switched to them this year as they were the cheapest to offer this.(They also do a cheaper version which is the normal 12 months one for one illness type).
