Hello, can anyone recommend a pet insurance company that covers a rabbit aged 5 and that covers dental work?
I cant seem to find a company that covers both. Alot of the companies ive looked into dont covers dental work or provide insurance for rabbits over 5.
Can anyone help please?

Agria offer very comprehensive cover for dogs and include dental so maybe worth checking them if you’ve not already

@BarbarianBabsYes unfortunately Agria was one of many I checked and got a quote for today that didnt cover dental

Is the issue that your rabbit has already needed dental work in which case no policy will immediately cover a pre-existing condition.

Curlymam88 · 27/04/2026 14:41

No shes already had her teeth filed but rabbits need their teeth trimmed regularly so I was looking for an insurance company that covers any future dental work but alot of policies ive found dont cover dental work so was just wondering if any rabbit owners had found any that cover it.

Many pets? I’ve claimed a few times for dental issues

So it is a pre-existing condition as you have already had work done. Unfortunately you are highly unlikely to get cover for this going forward.

@Needanadultgapyear I take it youre not a rabbit owner? Rabbits need to have dental work done regularly as their teeth are growing daily. Its not classed as a condition unless Rabbits having teeth is a condition?

I have been a rabbit owner yes. But actually I am a vet who treats rabbits and deals with insurance claims.
if you rabbit needs dental treatment it is due to misalignment to the teeth which is a medical condition ( can either be a congenital misalignment or due to incorrect diet) and would be classed as a pre-existing condition.

If rabbits teeth have correct alignment the wear each other down evenly as they grind grass and hay between their teeth just like wild rabbits do.

HattiesBag · 28/04/2026 15:35

Needing dental work isn't the norm -but it is common. It indicates an issue (like poorly aligned teeth, a lack of hay/fibre in the diet). As PP has said, an insurer will classify your rabbit as having pre-existing dental issues and probably won't cover any dental treatmenr going forward . However , a small number of insurers will provide cover for preexisting issues for a premium. ManyPets used to. Not sure if they still do.

Flittybee · 28/04/2026 15:38

Sadly I think Needanadultgapyear is right. Insurance companies will wangle their way out of anything, so despite the prior teeth work being maintenance, I would bet my bottom dollar, teeth and anything to do with them would be excluded from any cover.

8TinyToeBeans · 28/04/2026 15:38

I think you'll struggle to find insurance that covers regular trimming of teeth. It'll likely only cover abnormal dental issues. Regular teeth care either comes through diet, or if diet can't keep up with growth then through trimming, but that's not the type of thing insurance covers. Unless things have changed since we had rabbits!
Our rabbits lived out on grass and never needed their teeth trimmed cause they just ate as nature designed them to.

My rabbit is 5 years old and has only had to have her teeth filed once. Im very aware of hay, grass, chew things etc im merely asking if anyone knows of insurance companies that cover dental work. She doesnt have a pre existing condition. Jeez this is mumsnet for you I guess 🙄
Signing out now again for another couple of years.
