Posh cat which appears to be a stray - do we take it in? (long)

It's a Siamese/Rex cross of some kind. They're odd looking things - Si Rex cat.

It's been wandering around for a week or so - it seems to be barely more than a kitten, & it's ravenous - we put food outside for one of our (3) cats who prefers to live outdoors, & the Si-Rex keeps wolfing it down. Also, its coat is patchy & it's incredibly thin - if it was any other breed I'd say it was abandoned & starving , but they're such weird looking animals I'm just not sure!

It's friendly but a bit wary. We've asked round the neighbours. No-one knows where it's come from, & several of them have been feeding it too.

What do we do? If it's genuinely feral, we'd happily take the poor little beggar in - but don't want to discover we've nicked someone's pedigree animal & they're supposed to look like that...

Anyone familiar with Rex cats?

why don't you take it to a vet and see if it has been chipped.

snice · 17/06/2008 22:25

Take it to the local vets and get them to check if its chipped-most expensive cats would be unless its too young to have been done yet

LuckySalem · 17/06/2008 22:26

If I were you, I'd put a paper collar round its neck asking anyone who owns it to contact you. If no-one contacts you within a week (or so)

Call the cats protection or RSPCA and say you have found a stray cat and are taking it in, give them a description, explain what you've done (collar thingie) and say that you will "foster" it for now till they're normal period for the owner to turn up runs out and then you will be keeping it.

This way you've done everything you can to find the owner and if it is a stray it'll have a nice new home.

Sorry I don't know anything about specific breeds, my two are mongrel cats!

ravenAK · 17/06/2008 22:28

good idea!

We'll keep feeding it & see if we can get it into a basket to take it to the vet.

LuckySalem, that was one idea I did have - I've a spare collar & barrel tag somewhere, so thought I might put a message saying 'if this is your cat, can you ring us so we know it's not a stray...'

Thanks all.

I agree with the microchip thingie - forgot about our world of advanced technology! lol

LyraSilvertongue · 17/06/2008 22:46

Should be easy enough to get it into a basket if you put the food in there.

Lovesdogsandcats · 18/06/2008 01:39

get it in a basket, take to vet-if vet says in poor health/appears to be stray, then keep it as obv the owners don't care. poor thing sounds as if it would love to move in with you.

ravenAK · 21/06/2008 12:08

Well, we caught him, & took him to the local vet.

He's neutered, & about 5 years old, so not a kitten that's been abandoned for not meeting breed standards (which was our working theory). He's apparently in reasonable health - v thin, & the patchy coat is probably an allergy (fleas?).

He's not chipped. We've put a 'found' ad in the local paper, but he's currently tucking into a slap up meal & exploring what may well be his new home...

Does he have alovely rex coat? How wonderful, hope he's not too noisy!

MehgaLegs · 21/06/2008 12:34

This is how we ended up with our cat. She isn't as posh as we first thought though. She looks like a blue Burmese type thing but she is actually just a grey shorthaired moggy.

She appeared in our back garden, very pg, disappeared for a month then returned and stayed. we took her to RSPCA and they checked her for a chip, put up found posters and contacted missing pet website. Seems she had been adandoned as very pg.

She is still with us 5 1/2 years on and she is a lovely cat.

ravenAK · 21/06/2008 12:46

He's got a proper Siamese miaow! (My mum's family always had Siamese cats, so I think it's a lovely noise...)

His coat's in terrible condition atm, but we think he's going to be very handsome when he's had a bit of tlc.

I'm now secretly hoping no-one does claim him. No idea how he came to be stray, though - he's obviously used to people.

It's how our old cat adopted us. If it didn't take a shine to you it would disappear pretty quickly. Cats know when they are on to a good thing.

devonblue · 21/06/2008 12:58

Do have a good check to make sure he's not lost though. Our children would be devastated if one of our (posh) cats went missing.

There are clubs for pedigree cat breeds where you could maybe put a note on their website or something. (Though just because he's a pedigree doesn't mean he won't be abandoned.)

Also sometimes they are a bit stupid and can't make their way home like 'normal' cats...

ravenAK · 21/06/2008 13:28

Yes indeed devonblue - ad in local paper, registered as found with Cats' Protection League, have emailed a couple of local-ish Rex breeders to see if they can help []

Would hate to think someone's pining for their lost cat. He's v affectionate (don't think he's been more than a foot away from me since he got back from the vet - currently tapping the PC mouse!), so he obviously had a loving home at some point...

lol at posh cat
reminds me of that " posh tiger" on that spoof show

Flobberghasted · 21/06/2008 13:30

posh tiger

SparklyGothKat · 21/06/2008 13:36

take a pic!! he sounds lovely!

devonblue · 21/06/2008 13:57

Well he's lucky to have found a loving home. And he may be unwanted - our breeder's friend had to rescue one of her kittens back from an uncaring owner.

ravenAK · 21/06/2008 20:19

Well - final chapter in the saga - v nice gentleman from adjoining street came round saying he'd lost his cat & was knocking door-to-door.

Turns out he's recently moved in (which is why the cat's only just appeared in the 'hood )& the cat is a much loved pet & noted scrounger of free meals! He's going through a moult atm & has patchy fur at the best of times (it's a recognised 'fault' in the breed).

So that's a relief. Not sure how ds & dd1 will feel when they wake up to find he's gone though...

devonblue · 21/06/2008 21:21

Hope you charged him for the vet visit and told him to get him chipped.

devonblue · 21/06/2008 21:22

(Or maybe you could share him . All the fun with none of the responsibility.)
