Getting a cat... come talk to me!

My gorgeous little kitten was born Thursday night.

Landlord has ok'd it.

I am very excited and sh*tting myself slightly at the thought of paying for cat stuff I hate my children growing up without pets though, so we WILL get by, I will just go teetotal.

Anyway, some questions...

I qualify for PDSA for vet costs, but I am assuming that doesn't include getting her spayed?

Do they do that too (and I pay), or do I go to a different vet? If the different one - are they all a fixed rate or shop around???

Food - are they best with that dry all in one stuff, tins, a mix of tins and biscuits. Are some better than others (our cats always had felix growing up as I remember whiskas was too rich for them).

Erm... what else?

Oh yes, we have a cat flap. How do I train it to go outside rather than in the tray?

ooh yummy. my new babies are just 10 weeks old, kittens are lovely

Don't know about the pdsa/vet stuff

Food - all the vets etc tell you dry is best, but I think there's dry and dry - the expensive dry is probably excellent but it's also pricey. Mine won't touch it anyway! so they get whoever's kitten food is on a special offer on the day. Whiskas is their favourite, but they happily eat Felix, and sainsburys and waitrose own label. They were very rude about Iams wet kitten food.

Send off for everyone's kitten pack - you get some free sachets to get you started.

She can't go outside until she has had her second jab, which is about 12 weeks. In the meantime she will use her tray indoors so be prepared. When she can go outside first you have to teach her how to use the cat flap (put the food outside it!), then move the litter tray nearer and nearer the flap, then move it outside, then move it down the garden, then dig her a nice kitty loo at the far end of the garden (just nice soft earth) and pop in a poo or two. If you are not careful she will just go outside the flap and that is veyr stinky indeed.

Have a lovely time and take lots and lots of photos

I read the title as "getting a cat to talk to me!".

Flamesparrow · 16/06/2008 15:08

Gimme a few weeks to get the thing, and then the fun cat talking thread will begin

I am assuming for that it will need many treats, and me many drugs
