Really need some quick opinions from cat owners/vets/vet nurses etc

Cat smells bad from his face end, it smells of faeces to me! Could it be something more serious than his teeth, can't get him an appt until Wed I wondered if he really needs to seen more urgently than that.

He eats 99% of the time dried food - royal cannin, with the very occasional stolen treat of tuna, chicken, licking out the tin of tomatoes etc.

Should his mouth look very pink or does that depend on colouring, he is fawn silver and his lips look pale to me but that could be normal.

Unusually pale gums can be a sign of internal bleeding... How is he in himself, does he seem in pain/unhappy/antisocial or is he quite normal?

CarGirl · 12/06/2008 12:35

doesn't seem in pain, he's not happy with me because I keep trying to look at his teeth

He was in a scrap last night and his mouth got hurt I think because there was some bleeding but he started smelling a couple of days earlier but thought it was my imagination at first. He's still eating fine and is still wanting lots of affection.

Actually his lips are the same colour as his nose so he may be generally that sort of colour.

He's 8.5 so thought teeth could be quite likely?

why do you have to wait nearly a week for an appointment to see the vet? If he's still eating and pooping and weeing normally its probably not much to worry about, but a week is a long time for a cat needing treatment!

cyteen · 12/06/2008 12:38

Could be...perhaps he's got a rotten tooth or an abscess? Mind you, my male cat's breath absolutely honks and he's around the same age.

I wouldn't worry about the gum colour if he seems himself - I'd imagine that if he was hurt enough to be bleeding internally, he'd be doing that ears-back 'fuck off and leave me alone' hiss. Just take him to the vet's when you can

bethoo · 12/06/2008 12:40

may need his teeth cleaned. or could have recently eaten a bird or mouth. or having been in a fight got a cut and got infected. but tbh if he is eating and seems fine in himself i would nto think it wa a life or death situation so ntohing to worry about.

bethoo · 12/06/2008 12:40

mouse not mouth!

NotABanana · 12/06/2008 12:41

Has the cat eaten poo?

ComeOVeneer · 12/06/2008 12:43

Sounds dental. Either a rotten tooth/abcess or build up of tartar. Be prepared to be charged a small fortune to have it treated.

A dry diet does help a lot but with age there teeth do deteriorate.

emiliadaniel · 12/06/2008 16:40

I am a vet and it sounds most likely to be an abscess. Don't leave it until Wednesday, even if it is 'just' his teeth.

PortBlacksandResident · 12/06/2008 16:48

Could it be Gingivitis?

CarGirl · 12/06/2008 17:11

I was waiting until Wed to see the vet nurse (for free) to then book in to presumably have them cleaned/extracted etc - just kind of object having to pay ££££££££££££££'s for a 2 min appointment when they won't be able to treat him there and then - don't mind that I have to pay to get him treated thougheven though I know a GA is not going to an inexpensive thing.

Hmmm what indicates abscess - the horrific smell? We've had him 18 months and I've never noticed him smelling before - he spends a lot of time sitting on the table at my nose height whilst insisting on affection.

I will have to phone tomorrow see when I get a vet appt, dig out the ear plugs to cope with the constant wailing all the way & back, waiting room etc etc etc He's very noisy.

If it is an abscess they will be able to start treating him there and then. And if a dental problem is making him smell that foul he will almost certainly need antibiotics before an anaesthetic, which only a vet can prescribe.

CarGirl · 12/06/2008 17:24

okay will check that he still stinks in the morning and get him a vet appt asap, and start selling off my petrol to pay for the treatment!

Let us know how you get on.

Lovesdogsandcats · 12/06/2008 23:14

not all vets cost the earth, I was told by various people to expect a bill of hundreds when my dog had pre anaesthetic bloods, 2 growths and 8 teeth removed last year - it was £225 for the lot.

Anyway, when it comes to teeth you really can't wait, beg steal borrow, whatever. Toothache is horrible.

CarGirl · 13/06/2008 12:12

well bizarrely the stench has gone he now just smells of normal cat food breath I wonder if he had a bit of rotting meat wedged between his teeth or something (or the abcess had burst?). He is def eating his biscuits okay so the immediate panick is over and we'll take a trip to the Vets Monday. I live in Surrey and believe me all the local vets are expensive.........

CarGirl · 18/06/2008 18:26

BAck from the vet, no sign of abcess but he's going back Friday to get his teeth cleaned and possible 2 out. Nurse reckons it could have been something stuck in his throat. Just paid £46 to have his bloods done prior to GA because of his age - he was very good and let them take the bloods, he is overweight and has fleas too (only just because his frontline ran out last week grrrrr)

Lovesdogsandcats · 19/06/2008 20:21

Glad you're getting him sorted. Deffo worth the pre-anaesthetic tests. You will see a different cat after his dental and his breath will be sweet smelling once more.

CarGirl · 19/06/2008 20:46

His breath doesn't smell anymore and he still eats fine but I know they often need their teeth doing so what's £250 every few years . He hasn't realised he's shut in for the night and no more food - I think it could be a long & noisy night, I'm running a sweepstake on what time we let him out the kitchen and allow him to sleep with us so we get some peace

OP posts:
Lovesdogsandcats · 19/06/2008 22:55

£250's a bit steep! I paid £225 for the pre op bloods like you had, 8 teeth removed and 2 growths removed from my dog last year.

Lovesdogsandcats · 19/06/2008 23:03

OOps sorry, i already told you that further up

CarGirl · 21/06/2008 12:12

well it came to £225 in total including pre-op bloods & 6 months of frontline, one tooth exracted and deep clean on the rest. He's still sleeping it off I think, he hasn't tried to go out yet - he's such a home boy, hence why he needs to lose weight! He's also lost his voice quite a bit from being vocal at the vets, at least we got a quiet night from him
