What would you pay a pet sitter?

Me and DH are looking for ways to earn extra money so are advertising ourselves to look after cats etc in people's homes when they go away on holiday. Not so much dogs because they really need to be with people all the time and we are thinking pop in in the morning and again in the evening to play/feed/close curtains etc. We already do this for our neighbour who goes away 6 or 7 times a year but we dont ask for money for it. Anyway what do you think we should charge? Per visit? Per animal? Per day? Dont know. We dont really have to take petrol into account as we will only do our village so it will all be within walking distance.

fiver a day, but then I'm a cheapskate.

My mum charges £14 per day for full on dog-sitting in her house....in line with all local kennels (and only to a few clients of hers!)

OK - In London I paid £8 per day. That was for one visit. I have an automatic cat feeder with 2 trays so the sitter could set it to pop up in the morning - so only 1 visit per day needed.

Outside London I pay £6.50 for the same service.

hmm... fiver for 2 visits or one? the neighbour I already pet sit for I do 2 visits each one for about 10-15 mins.

I used to pay £6 per visit when I lived in Southend and had a pet sitter.

The vet nurses I work with do a similar thing and charge £5 a visit and will offer to water plants/pick up post etc all in too. They do spend a bit of time grooming the cat(s) if possible (ie cat not off hiding) and playing with it/cuddles on each visit if they can. That is in Kent

eenybeeny · 12/06/2008 22:06

I am thinking £5 a visit. That sounds fair to me.

I paid £7 per day weekdays and £8 at weekends for 3 cats to be fed/watered/litter tray cleaned out in central London.

Youcannotbeserious · 12/06/2008 22:09

I paid £15 per day to have my puppy looked after from 8-6 on the days I had to work.

LuckySalem · 12/06/2008 22:10

I would pay (if I were working or on hols or something)

£5 a day and i'd expect 2 visits and the cattray cleaned each day. If people were willing to spend time with my cats (they are soooo loving they'd want hugs etc) then i'd probably pay £7.

LynetteScavo · 12/06/2008 22:11

I would say £3.50 per feed for a cat. A bit extra if they want you to staty and make a fuss of their moggy.

eenybeeny · 12/06/2008 22:12

I dont think £5 a day when you are doing 2 visits and cleaning trays etc is a lot. That is why I was thinking £5 a visit. Think about it. Each visit I will be walking there, doing everything at the house, cuddling with cats, then walking back. That is worth £5. If I did it twice a day I would hope to get £10.

eeneybeeny - If you were gonna stay and play with my cats (there's 2 and they are horrors) then i'd probably pay you more. lol

However, if it were literally feed and change trays I'd still say £5 a day i'm afraid.

And no offence - But if you want to start doing a petsitter job you can't ask the owners to pay for how you get there etc. You wouldn't get paid extra if you walked to a normal job. IYKWIM

LuckySalem · 12/06/2008 22:16

Oh and I wasn't including anything else in the house. I literally meant just feed and tray.
Again the more you arrange to do the more you should get paid.

Hope you don't think i'm being mean - I'm just telling you what I'd pay.

eenybeeny · 12/06/2008 22:18

well I used to pay a petsitter £6 a visit at 2 visits a day and he drove to ours. As he was in business for himself I would think he figured petrol into his costs??? I am just thinking of my time. But I see your point. There is a pet sitter that works in a neighbouring village (I would not be competition) I will find out how much they charge per visit.

I think if I go to your house twice a day £5 just isnt enough.

I dont think you are being mean! Everyone has different ideas of what is a fair price I guess!

pay £6 a day, for 2 visits a day.

dead cheap imo, would never consider kennels, cats like their own enviroment.

eenybeeny · 14/06/2008 07:55

the numbers seem to vary wildly!!!

agree about kennels they just suffer if they are taken out of their home.

Cats feeders around here (SW London) charge £9.50 to £10 a day for one visit.
