1st time dog mum here... cockapoo girl.. shes now 9 months old... shes very spoilt I will admit.. she sleeps in my bed. She is settled, good with the kids despite the younger one having her tortured. She is so lovable and I absolutely love her. However, she thinks shes a human, she will sit and watch TV up right with her paw on the side which is really cute and absolutely no problem, however, here's the problem, she wont eat dog food... she actually has vomited on occasion where shes been so hungry and still won't eat dog food.. ive tried wet dog food, kibble, different kinds, she wont eat it... any suggestions?

Well it wasn't obvious you're feeding her the family food (leftovers I presume?).
She is still young and at the last opportunity to train and set routines.
You really need to be super disciplined at this stage.
By 1 years old I expect the dog to eat 2 meals a day only and these are at set times of the day. If the dog doesn't finish the food, you take it away and feed fresh food again at the next meal time.
Absolutely no treats, this includes feeding your dog food from your plate or the odd bit of food when you are having a snack. Unfortunately this can be a loosing battle with children in the house but you can only try your best.
Would it be easier if you prepare her meals yourself, using safe leftovers from your meals (for ex. No gravy, no grapes, no salt, no sugar etc), with added fresh vegetables, tinned fish or raw meat, broth, powder supplements? At least you know she eats from your own food but in this way you are adding some valuable nutrients and vitamins and minerals.
Good luck, she sounds really adorable and like a very nice dog. The tv watching is so cute!
You sound a bit too relaxed at this stage. If you put in the time and effort consistently until she is 12-18 months, then you can truly enjoy your time together and relax all you like for the next 12-15 years.

We cook our own dog food, which we put in the blender then freeze in takeaway tubs. We buy the meat from the raw dog food place, it gets mixed with all sorts of vegetables plus some other bits, our dog LOVES it after refusing to eat kibble and he looks fantastic. Worth a try? Happy to share our recipe!

Mine was the same. I tried raw, I tried Millie's Wolfheart and Butternut Box, and abotu a billion other brands both wet and dry, but the only thing she would eat in the end was Hills Science Plan, which wouldn't be my first choice, but if she'll eat it, so be it. You might just have to try more brands.

Leftovers if suitable... or will make her chicken, chicken sausages, tuna and rice etc...
I am really relaxed and I 100% accept this is my fault from giving her bits off my plate etc. Im gonna try hard to cut this and do the whole lifting plate etc... thanks so much

My very fussy girl likes poppys picnic meatballs, lightly cooked. Or raw dogfoos from our local farm shop, again lightly cooked. Sometimes she has a little cheese added tp the top if she is having a particularly fussy day.

Oh and she eats of a plate not out of a bowl,

Calm down, its a figure of speech in NI.... obviously doesnt actually mean tortured.

What does it mean?

ScrapeandScratch · 01/01/2026 17:48

My recommendation for raw dog food is Natural Instinct. Our dog was really fussy but she absolutely loves this and licks the bowl clean every time.
It comes frozen in 1kg packs so easy to defrost and portion out.

Oh and she eats of a plate not out of a bowl,

Ours won’t eat out of a bowl either so we just use our side plates now. And definitely be strict on not feeding from your plate/at the table - nothing worse than a dog begging or pestering you whilst you’re sitting down for a meal. We sit down for a meal say settle and ours knows to go to lay in his bed in the kitchen - one of the most useful training tips I got on here.

Any recommendations? What one do you use?

I feed bulmers complete 80/10/10 then add extras to it but something like nature's menu is ideal for beginners as you can just defrost and feed.

Once you get a bit more used to it it's cheaper to get the complete minces and add the extras yourself
