Got a kitten day before yesterday but the dog wont shut up. It just constantly barks at it, if the dog has come in the room while cat has been on floor it has chased her even round the back of the t.v.

If the cats not in the room because i've had enough and put it in the shower room or the kids have taken it to their bedroom the dog spends all its time looking for it. He must be exhausted, he's not settled at all. I just dont know what to do.

Can you keep the kitten in a seperate room until the dog has had time to get used to the idea?

CarGirl · 11/06/2008 19:49

put kitten or dog in cage to let them get used to each other.

Hmmmm kitten in cage, you discipline dog as to how to respond to kitten?

it will get better.

Once the kitten is big enough to stand up to the dog and show it who's boss.

In about 6 months or so.

We had "supervised visitation"

Introducing our 2 tiny kittens to manic huge German Shepherd was interesting. We kept kittens in kitchen and dog had free run of house, then we sat on the floor stroking dog & holding collar whilst kittens bought in for visits.

He used to lunge at them (they would hiss & spit back - very funny with the size difference). We let the dog sniff them.

When they were high up on their cat tree in kitchen we would let dog sniff them there.

If we went out, dog was left in garden or house except kitchen and kittens left in kitchen.

It did take a few weeks before we could let the dog loose with them. He still chases the cat (now only one) occassionally, but I think they both enjoy it. The cat peers around doors before coming into a room!

Once, we had a cat fight in the garden, one of ours v a neighbour. I let the dog out, our cat sat back & watched the dog chase other cat all the way down the 200+ft of garden & over the fence

ok so is it ok to keep the cat in say dd's bedroom as there isn't really anywhere else suitable, kitchen needs access atall times really so cant keep it in there, if i try and keep the dog out then it just barks and scratches to be let in, it wont even go out the garden. Will the cat not get bored on its own.

I suppose the cat won't mind one room over another - will DD mind the litter tray in her room?

Also, will be a hard habit to break of sleeping on the bed/pillow etc.

Ours were OK but that's why we got 2 together as we knew they would be left each day as I worked 9:30-2 daily.

ok things are getting better the dog has stopped constantly barking at her and just chases her into a corner instead. The dog wants to be in whatever room i'm in so as long as i'm in the same room as the dog we are sorted.
