Could someone please give me some advice to pass on to my brother about his dog.

My brother rescued a staffie (Max) a few weeks ago. All has been well and Max has been going from strength to strength, he is 2.5 yo.

On Monday Max started to be sick in the afternoon I thought it could have been because of the heat. He was and still is drinking water. He was sick again yesterday and my brother has just called to say he has been sick again today. He has had small amounts of food and plenty of water.

he says Max seems absolutely fine in himself and has been on walks and is playing with his toys and he is still drinking water.

He doesn't want to bother the vet as Max seems fine. I don't know what to tell him. Should he not put any food down for a bit and just make sure he has water?

Please advise.
TIA

if the weather has been as hot as it is here it is not really a good idea for the dog to be having strenuous play. keep dog in shade and avoid taking him out in the heat of the day. plenty of fluids. heat stress can be fatal with dogs as it is with humans.

Staffies tend to have dodgy stomachs tbh, i would make sure he has plenty of water and maybe leave him till the morning with no food, then i would then give him bits of boiled rice and chicken breast to help get his stomach back on track.

Regarding food, i was told (and i do) to stick to chicken based food, as beef/rabbit etc can't mess them up a bit.

Firstly, you're never 'bothering' the vet - it's a vet's job! The service offered by most practices when you register goes beyond a check up each year - most are more than happy to offer advice or check over animals to allay owners' concerns.

If he is bright and well, the vomiting is infrequent and he is keeping water down then I would suggest starving him for a maximum of 12 hours and then slowly introducing small meals of bland food (boiled rice and chicken is ideal, but you can use pasta and white fish if you prefer). Offer small amounts of lukewarm water regularly. If he starts to vomit again then I'd recommend he sees a vet.

It's probably just a bug, especially if he's a scavenger on walks, but given his age and breed it's not impossible he's eaten a toy or some other random item, so definitely worth having him checked if this keeps up.

Thank you all. I will pass on the info and advice to my bro. Will see how Max is after 12 hours of starvation and a bit of chicken and rice. And will tell bro to get him to the vets if Max is still being sick.
