Might be getting a horse and wondered about horse insurance ,i would only be doing hacking ,none of your eventing type malarkey , and wondered if anyone on here can recommend a company and give me some idea of the cost .

Hmmm - hard to do actually. I was with one which was dire when I came to have to claim. Then had the policy with South Essex Insurance Brokers which was fine, but I never had to claim so couldn't really say what they would be like. I don't even know whether you can get a "happy hackers" policy rather than a cover all eventuality type. Might be worth looking at NFU? I don't think farmers are well known for paying over the odds

The NFU mutual have a good reputation for being fair on claims - not sure how much the policies are now though, its been a long time since I had a horse. The min you would need is mortality cover, vets fees and liability cover. Am v jealous!!

Steer clear of E&L, they've got a bad reputation for paying out. South Essex Insurance Brokers are very good and reasonable priced also petplan but are more expensive. I pay £60 month for my three which is for mortality, vet fees, liability cover.

I have various friends with NFU who have had no problems claiming for vets fees etc, and they do a good legal helpline too.

I have all mine with Petplan but I have heard NFU are highly recommended too (Def steer clear of E & L though). There are normally plenty of ads in the back of Horse & Hound etc. As part of my membership of the British Horse Society I get public liability cover-I think Gold membership is around £50 at the moment which means I save by not having public liability on my insurance policies. I do have 3 ponies though so I don't know if it would be a significant saving for a single horse owner.

Pet-plan too they have a good reputation and specialise in equine insurance. www.pet-insurance4you.co.uk

My dire one was E&L - they fought like fury to avoid paying out the claim.
