Long haired miniature dachshund- very close to ordering! Couple of questions

Hi so we are strongly considering putting a deposit down on a miniature long haired golden dachshund puppy 😍. Just looking for some do’s and dont’s with the breed, I previously owned a smooth haired miniature who was adorable but pretty high maintenance! I hear the long haired are better temperament, is this true? We have an 11 year old and a 13 year old and they are very keen to own one. Looking for pros and cons of the breed and also on whether we go for a male or female, many thanks!

Train not too jump on and off things indoors as their spine is can easily suffer.

Whilst I love their faces I would not have one because of spinal issues.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 15/12/2025 20:19

Spinal issues.
Also, reputable breeder? It’s very easy to accidentally buy from a puppy farm given how trendy the breed is right now.

PortSalutPlease · 15/12/2025 20:20

They are prone to spinal issues so you need to be prepared for the potential to spend £££ at the vet’s. Miniatures even more so because people pick them up so much it’s more likely to injure them. In terms of character, they can be both stubborn and aloof and quite nervy - they’re quite hard work. Again, more so than standard ones. (Stronger napoleon complex?!) Will you be planning on grooming at home and if not have you factored in the grooming costs?

PortSalutPlease · 15/12/2025 20:21

Oh also, if the breeder has puppies listed at this time of year, they are almost certainly not legit. Only backyard and puppy farmers list puppies for sale at Christmas!

We have a 5 year old short haired miniature but I always lust after the long haired blonde when we see them! They’re very loyal dogs but can be very barky and suffer from small dog syndrome! Ours has grown up with toddlers and so great with kids, not keen on big dogs. They seem to recognise other sausages and get on best with those! Ours is very lazy and sends most of his day napping it seems!

Rescue is the best breed!

SleafordSods · 15/12/2025 20:24

I’ve seen this advice so often in MN but it really is worth doing, if you’re on FB join a breed specific FB group and read a lot of posts. UK Miniature Dachshunds is a good one.

I’d also read:

and read up on IVDD.

Rescue is the best breed!

If you do think about a rescuing a DDog then have a look at Dachshund Rescue.

Edited because of typos.

Can you get breeds that look like the top one not the bottom

I love the look of the long haired minis - we jokingly refer to them as AwkwardPups minions as he is a golden cocker spaniel so the face and ears look quite similar! I just couldn't have a dachsie as the IVDD risk is just too high for me unfortunately, much as I admire them.

The ones we have met have often been pretty vocal but I think thats common in the breed. From one longer haired dog owner to another, I'd recommend an Equafleece to minimise grooming after walks. I'd imagine their coats have similar propensity to collect every burr, grass seed and thorny twig they pass so be prepared for lots of paw checking after walks etc (& get them used to this type of handling/coat inspections from day one).

Have just remembered where to look for information on IVDD, it’s here.

I have a long haired Black and Tan and she has a very sweet temperament. She is very loving and motherly! She doesn’t bark as much as my short haired mini, and she is much more independent.

Errr I had a litter for sales three years ago Christmas. It timed with when my bitch had her season.

There are far easier, and more logical, ways to tell if a breeder is reputable or not.

Minty25 · 16/12/2025 08:51

My son and his gf have two and we sometimes look after them. Elder one is very barky but does have issues as was a rescue. I just find them so wriggly and hard to get hold of to lift them into the car !

How nice for you. It doesn’t change the fact that the vast majority of unscrupulous breeders target the Christmas market…..

Nannyfannybanny · 16/12/2025 09:30

I have a fairly near neighbour with one, yes, very nervous and yappy. I love the look of them, wouldn't have one, because of this and the spinal issues. Several in our village go round in special dog prams and they aren't elderly, just skeletal issues.. I see a lot of women in their 30s, with a certain look, lots of make up,false eye lashes, blown up lips, carting them around in the shops of a near by town, like some kind of status symbol.

And as I said, there are far more logical ways to tell if someone is a good breeder or not.

Basing it based off the time of year is like firing a gun in the dark and hoping you hit a target.

Looks like we’ve found a dodgy breeder, folks Hmm

What a ridiculous comment. 🙄

My dogs' breeder currently has puppies available. He's highly respected and successful in the trialling world, with over 30 years of experience. He certainly isn't a BYB or a puppy farm.
He can't help when the bitch comes into season. Should he have waited another 9 months or so to have a litter?

Yep. The dodgiest puppy farm breeder going I am…

I’m so dodgy I make Starry Tails look legit.

Yes, that’s literally exactly what they should be doing. If they must use dogs for profit they should be doing everything they can to ensure the puppies go to responsible homes who’ve done their research, not as Christmas presents.

Lifejigsaw · 16/12/2025 18:22

And you can do that at any time of the year.

SpanielsGalore · 16/12/2025 19:27

@PortSalutPlease I didn't realise the two things were mutually exclusive.

Apparently they are if you have a brain the size of TDs (to use your diplomatic name for him!)

I'm sure TD is more intelligent than a lot of people I meet.

@PortSalutPlease Just out of interest, my last puppy was a birthday present. Is that allowed?
