I feel terrible

I accidently hit a dog while driving. I was driving down the road and a dog darted out between 2 cars. I didn't see it on the pavement before the incident and the owner wasn't with it.
The dog was badly injured and I took him straight to the vet, who found the owner.
I put in an incident report with the police and my car insurance (I'm not claiming for any damages or anything) but I'm worried about what will happen. Can I be liable? I feel awful about the poor dog but now I'm also worried about being at fault legally.

No, not your fault legally. Hard to deal with emotionally though, I hope you're ok x

No, it’s not your fault. The dog shouldn’t have been running loose.
Horribly upsetting for you.Flowers

The dog owner is negligent if a dog is loose and causes an accident, the owner is usually responsible for failing to secure it, making them liable for your damages, if you have any. However if you were speeding or driving recklessly you might be found partly or fully at fault, even if the dog was loose. Not saying this was the case for you at all, but that's just the position. The owner would have to prove this though. Sorry this happened to you.

It wasn't your fault, it was the owner's fault for not having it on a lead near traffic. You did everything you should have done.

Thank you, I was thankfully going a little under the speed limit in a 30 or I dont think the dog would have survived.

You poor thing! Of course its not your fault - you didn't go careering onto the pavement to purposely mow it down, it was an accident, and not one caused by you at that.

Hope you're OK x
