Over the road was fed up of their 10 week old kitten so we have just taken it in, its 10wks old I've not got a clue how often I should feed it or how much.

First introductions to our two yr old lhasa apso were not good they have both gone biserk.

Its got fleas so have sprayed defest all round and given it a johnsons flea tablet that over the road gave me. So how do I introduce them.

Where should I put it to sleep. DD has taken it to her bedroom because i can't cope with the dog and the cat keeping them apart and the only way i can do that is to lock the cat in the utility.

Also when can it go out - it hasn't as of yet.

Please tell me I wont regret this.

He is rather cute.

crikey thats alot of questions

have you got a tray you could use as a litter tray. You could put some soil in it until you get some cat litter if you dont have any

I would feed 3 times a day at the mo. Do you know what food it was on. Not a good idea to change food to suddenly could cause upset tummy.

make it a bed out of a small cardboard box and a towel. You may have to cut one side down so it can get in and out. It will then probably ignore the box and sleep somewhere else anyway!

It will all calm down in a day or two. I wouldnt let it out unsupervised yet as it might head off back over the road to previous home.

this might be useful

feeding - 4 small meals a day for now and offer some biscuits in between though may not take these until a bit older - depends on the cat.

Vaccines needed - call the vets in the morning and get it booked in asap for first vaccs and once over, plus a decent wormer and flea treatment. You will need to get a flea treatment for the dog now too as they will already be sharing their extra friends.

Bed - anything nice and snuggly it can curl up in will be welcomed - box idea above is great, with a fleecy blanket or an old jumper that type of thing to sleep on.

Litter tray - really need one! Cut an old cardboard box down for now and line it with a cut down bin liner or carrier bag. A bit of soil in it and some newspaper too then out first thing tomorrow to the petshop and buy a tray and some litter for it. Alternatively if you have any sawdust at home for a hamster cage or similar you could put that in the tray for now instead.

Don't let him out until he is fully vaccinated and also consider that you may prefer to have him neutered too before he goes out - usually done about 6 months old. Ideally also get a microchip put in place before you do too so he can be returned to you if he does go missing. Bear in mind while he is still very small he is likely to get picked on by bigger cats - by the time he is neutered he will be a more sensible size to defend himself.

Think about pet insurance too.

It will seem less daunting in time - enjoy him. Ooh and you may want to rethink the whole in your daughters room until he is 100%deflead etc.......?! I have no idea what the Johnsons flea tablet contains but there is only one table I know of that will kill fleas and this is only available on prescription. I suspect the problem will not be going away just yet - Frontline/frontline combo is your best option for dog and cat.

ok he did come with his bed and his litter tray.

i tried putting him in downstairst shower room but he was climbing the wall to the windowsill.

I dont know what else to do with him because I obvioulsy can't leave him any where near the dog seems they went so mad.

I've got to go out for the morning tomorrow will he be ok?

I've gone through him with nit comb lol

I didn't keep our latest kitten in till 6 months old - just get him neutered as soon as you can. Frontline (for fleas) you can buy at Pets At Home, if you have one near, as well as vets. Kittens are bloody hard work at times but so worth it. Dog and cat will get used to each other - go for lots of short introductions, and give the dog lots of extra love and affection.

Ecmo · 09/06/2008 22:56

You won't have to keep him in for 6 months. But its a good idea not to let him roam about too much outside till he is vaccinated.

He will be fine on his own but will need a litter tray.

found this about introducing kitten to a dog.

Introducing a new cat into a household where there is a dog is a little different. Keep them separated, with the cat in its own room, for the first few days. Then pick a time when the dog is outside or crated, and let the cat begin to explore the rest of the house. Once the cat seems comfortable in the house, you can begin introducing the dog and the cat. Keep the dog on a short leash, give the command for a sit or a down/stay and allow the cat to come into the room. If the dog is remaining quiet and the cat seems interested, let the cat come over and investigate the dog. The main concerns here are that the dog might get aggressive, or that the cat might claw at the dog's face. Knowing some of your new cat's previous history can help you know what to expect. Obviously, a cat that has been chased by a dog in its previous home is much less likely to do well in a new home with a dog. Some dogs are wonderful with cats, while some can be a threat. There are some dogs who instinctively see small animals as prey to be hunted. Monitor the dog and cat closely and do not leave them alone together until you are certain they will get along well. Make sure there are safe retreats in the house where the cat can get away from the dog. A baby gate across the doorway of one room works well. Position the gate 4 to 5 inches above the floor for young kittens or older cats who cannot jump well. Make sure litter boxes are out of the dog's reach, also, to prevent the dog from eating feces and/or litter, or keeping a frightened cat from using the litter box

I got my cat vaccinated around 16 weeks I think... (terrible memory ) and she went out once she had recovered from that. But I think boys are more likly to stray and get lost. (They follow their instincts to go and find their own territory away from what would be their father's)

It's up to you I guess. Get him microchipped and then you can get him back again if he strays

i got a dog after the cats she was so excited to play with them she kept running at them but they thought she was chasing them to bite them so they ran, so the next time she ran faster at them and on and on.

i got one (the most scared) on my knee and a cushion so that they felt safe and called the dog over keeping her down on the floor untill they had gotten used to each other didnt take too long and they share a kennel now [aww emoticon] .

but cats are definately the boss!!!

but as i said it was the other way around my cats were already there it was the dog who was new to the house and she was only a tiny puppy

notsofarnow · 10/06/2008 17:22

ok have taken him to the vets and it transpires he is a she. Has had first lot of vaccinations another lot due in 3 weeks then a week after tht he can go out.

What do you all feed your cats? Dried or tin and what works out good economically?

When she was little I fed my cat wet food, as apparently it's easier on their tummies. I think I got the felix kitten stuff. As she got older we got some whiskers dried stuff as well, which she likes. I just gave her a little of the dried stuff on top of the wet stuff to encourage her to eat up

Now she likes the Whiskers Oh so fishy and Oh so meaty as well as the whiskers dry.

Hope this helps

OnACaffieneHigh · 12/06/2008 10:43

Oh, and the whiskers cat milk! Loves the stuff, and reassures me that she drinks in the hot weather as she's not a fan of our tap water.
