LAst night i found a tick on my bed i assume it came from the dog as he had just got of the bed, (even though he isn't allowed!). So am i right in thinking the whole thing came off, could see would looked like legs at the front of tick, and is there any particular place on the dog they 'like' more than others? Where do i need to check for more?

TIA

it probably had had its fill and then dropped off - blobby pink thing with tiny legs at one end.

They can attach anywhere - but often around the face and legs(found one in my 5 month old puppies ear a couple of days ago - we have just come back from a holiday in sheep and deer country). We often pick them up in Thetford Forest - lots of deer there too.

There is a really useful little hook you can get that lets you twist them off really easily - I'll see if I can find it for you.

thank you, It def was a tick, even though my DH accused me of droping my mung beans all over the bed! (i do love them but not enough to take them to bed with me LOL. I will have to watch him when we go to thetford, thanks for tip. He is only 8 months old and into everything.

Just another quick question, is the cat at risk of catching them from the dog? or do they not transfer.

O-Tom - that's the one - have just checked ours.

here

throckenholt · 07/06/2008 16:52

re cat - possibly but maybe not likely - apparently they take their fill, drop off and then when they are ready get on to the next passing thing (often lurking in tall grass - hence dogs often being just the right height). Apparently they don't jump - more likely get brushed off as the dog passes.

If you are going to check - they are really small before they fill up and easy to miss (especially if you have a dog like mine that hates you doing anything "medical" to her !).

morethanyoubargainfor · 07/06/2008 16:55

so what do they look like when they are small?

I have had loads of dogs over the years but never expierenced ticks!

if you google tick under the image section you will see - they are about 1-2mm long, dark with waggling legs.

frogmarsh · 08/06/2008 16:32

Also check around the bottom, as this is where we found one on our dog the other day, apparently they like it there because it is warm

See here www.k9community.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=11867&hl= for excellent photos and advice about how to remove them- we did ours with tweezers

cameroonmama · 08/06/2008 18:40

spray the dog with Frontline and that stops them from getting ticks, it even works with our viscious African ones

wannaBe · 08/06/2008 18:47

if you have some white spirit or surgical spirit put some on some cotton wool and dab it on the tick - it will drop off then. When hooking them out you have to be really careful that you don't leave the head behind as it will cause severe infection so best to use spirit to get rid.

we just pull 'em out with our fingers here

he is frontlined very regularly. he doean't seem to have any more at the moment. Thanks for all your advice.
