Keeping Dog Smell at bay!

WinchSparkle80 · 26/10/2025 12:36

Afternoon, we have just adopted a Weimaraner puppy, all going as well as it can. We had minimal notice so not as prepared as would like.

Anyhoo, I am wary of dog smells, and before I go nose blind to it, apart from
keeping fresh air coming in, what can I do to ensure my house doesn’t stink?

Any tips gratefully received.

Congratulations on your new arrival ❤

Okay, I'm assuming you're referring to sweaty wet dog smell, rather than puppy toileting smell? So i'll just run through what we do. We have a giant breed with a long coat so our house probably whiffs a bit tbh 😬

Yes, fresh air coming in, so windows open as much as you can and don't let pup overheat. A sweaty dog is a whiffy cheesy feet smell.
The worst thing you can do is go overboard on fragrances to disguise it. It never works and dogs shouldn't be around strong perfumes anyway, because their noses are tens of thousands of times more sensitive than ours. So we avoid plug ins etc.
Obviously daily grooming is essential for a non smelly dog. Have enough towels to dry off dog after a wet, muddy walk, then brush off as soon as it's dry.
Wash their bedding regularly, preferably in an unfragranced detergent, no fabric conditioner.
Vacuum or wipe the flooring often, depending whether you are carpet or laminate, concentrate on areas where the dog lies.
Have a feeding mat down for food and another for water bowls. Wash them regularly.
Rotate the dogs toys and wash them pretty frequently also; little things like this are easy to overlook and it all helps to minimise the "we have pets!" announcement as soon as you open the door 😉

But, don't stress over it too much. All puppies have a bit of a smell, so enjoy your pup, because that's what matters most x

And don't forget there's a puppy support thread if you feel like chatting or need some general advice x

Brush your puppy daily using a good quality brush that will remove loose hair and dead skin. I’ve used a Mason Pearson brush for all my dogs and although it’s expensive, it’s still going strong after 30 years of daily use.
Use a dog bed that can be washed
Use throws on soft furnishings and wash in biological powder weekly
Restrict where the dogs are allowed and have hard floors and/or washable rugs in these areas
Bath your dog every 6-8 weeks
Avoid artificial fragrance such as Febreeze and use aromatherapy instead.

I’ve had several dogs all my life and found this really keeps on top of hair and smells.

Weimaraners stink. They have a greasy coat that smells cheesy. Wash it and it’s bedding very regularly. Ex had one that stank my house out and left greasy scuz everywhere.

@LizaRadleywasonthespectrum that is sooo good to know. Apparently it can be caused by ear issues but will defo maintain the washing of both bedding and pup!

Ex’s dog had no ear issues just stank. I was a qualified dog groomer. Every single one smelled the same.

I use Bugalugs Odour Control Spray with orange & lime, inbetween washes and it has kept stinky dog smell at bay
