Can’t re home this cat!

My friend has just left a DV relationship. She had 6 cats! I agreed to have one until she gets things sorted out. She’s gone to a women’s refuge I spoke to her last night and she said to just rehome it. I’ve rang all Rehoming centres and there all full. My son’s allergic and is wheezing and coughing his guts up. I’m so annoyed with myself for getting involved with this now as I don’t need the stress. What on earth am I supposed to do? He is being well looked after here but there is no way I can keep him.

I would ask around - neighbours, friends, parents' chat group and see if anyone is thinking of getting a cat.

He's gorgeous 😍

Anti histamines for your son.

keep the cat in a room or a couple of rooms plus access to the outside while you sort out a longer term solution

Ask her to speak to the refuge workers, they often have volunteers or charities that will specifically take in pets for those in refuges.

Contact rescues from further afield. Ask at vets.

Have you tried The cinnamon trust?
What area of the country are you in?

Lennonjingles · 26/09/2025 09:47

Are you on any local Facebook groups, you could try asking there for any local rescues, we have a few in our area that you wouldn’t know about until you asked.

How old is the cat and where are you? Im looking for a senior cat for my nan to keep her company since my grandad died but needs to be 12 years + as shes in her eighties.

Mondayoverthinker · 26/09/2025 10:10

Tried cat protection and other local rescues. Have popped him on Facebook but I need him to go to a good home so a little cautious about Facebook. He is 6 months old so still a little baby 😭 We’re in Shropshire.

No no to FB. We are in Glos. New start may help. In Forest of Dean. And vet may know other rescues. I would love another but my pair already hate each other.

You could try Purina Liveclear cat food. It has an egg protein in it that binds to the protein in cat saliva that is the allergen in their dander. It is expensive though and won't work if he's allergic to their hair. My son is allergic to cats but we feed our 3 cats this food and he no longer reacts to them.

mcmooberry · 26/09/2025 10:19

If the budget allows and the cat will eat it, Purina Liveclear food has been developed for people with allergies to allow them to live alongside their cats. Reviews are good, it seems very effective.

Hoppinggreen · 26/09/2025 10:22

My DD has a cat allergy and lived quite happily with cats, shee got useed to them pretty quickly. She takes Anti Histamines if necessary but only seems to react if the cat sleeps on her pillow or she has been away for a while and comes back.
Of course I wouldn't advise this if your sons allergy is very serious or life threatening

Whyherewego · 26/09/2025 10:22

I'd second Purina LiveClear. But there's another OP who is looking for a cat ... could this be a match?!
