Can anyone recommend an otc cat flea treatment?

I have two cats and my vet has just increased the price to £50 per month, which I can’t afford.

im looking at Advantage as a possible but before I buy I’m just wondering about others experience with it.

I made a post about this and was told none of them work apparently, but the vet wants £50 just for an appointment (no treatment) sooo following to see if anyone does actually have any recommendations

Unfortunately none otc work been there tried that learnt the hard way , I’ve now set up a savings pot to cover things like flea & worming treatments , 2 dogs 3 cats works out £295 per quarter 🙈 no way I can do that in one hit

This is a good service, subscription flea treatments. https://www.protect-mypet.com/ I only treat them over the summer as fleas don't survive/spread so easily over the colder months, and there is a negative impact on our water supply and wildlife of all these flea treatments for pets.

I foster for a cat charity and we use Advantage on all our cats. It's always worked fine and we have hundreds of cats through a year, some come in in an awful, flea-ridden state. Needs to be done religiously every month throughout the year to be effective though.

Your best bet would be to take the prescription from the vet and get it cheaper online. I wouldn’t risk the inferior OTC versions because I really, really don’t want fleas in the house!

I buy frontline from Amazon and the cat goes from itching to not itching in 24 hours 🤷🏼‍♀️

also my dd is allergic to to the flea bites and when she gets a couple of bites I use frontline on the cat and she is not bitten anymore.

@TwinklyWrinklyah thanks, that’s what I wanted to hear 😀

@Bitzeethanks, I tried that last time. Unfortunately by the time I’d paid for the prescription it ended up being as expensive as buying direct from the vets

I use Frontline OTC I buy from Pets online. Get the Drontal wormer too. My vet was charging ridiculous amounts, and It wanted one that covered ticks too, as we are in a high tick area.

Seems to work..... No fleas in several years, and only the odd tick.

deirdrerasheed · 16/09/2025 14:24

Online has been much cheaper for me. They tend to have black Friday sales.
I've heard only treat flees when the cat has flees? Treating in summer makes sense, because they're out more?
As for worming do you treat all year round?

thecatneuterer · 16/09/2025 21:45

None of them work. Well, Advantage used to work but now doesn't seem to in most areas, but you might find fleas haven't become immune where you are.

ItsGotToBePizza · 16/09/2025 21:51

My vet offers a monthly plan for bravecto - I currently pay 8.99 a month and that includes the consultation and quarterly treatments.

herbalteabag · 16/09/2025 22:04

I used to use Advantage but then it stopped working so I gave up.

There has been a lot of talk about that approach recently, partly because of the effect of the overuse of chemicals on the environment. It's certainly the approach I take, and even though I have over 20 permanent cats, which all go out, I find I can go for over three years without any sort of flea outbreak.

However, my house is designed for cats - no soft furnishings that aren't washable, hard flooring, skirting sealed with sealant etc, so any outbreak is quickly eradicated. I can understand why those in more normal environments might want to go for prevention rather than cure.

Be cautious there are reports of fake Frontline from an online retailer - sounds like Amazon. In the case concerned the owner tried to save a few pennies and ended up with a bill for £3k.
It is only safe to buy from a retailer who is regulated by the veterinary medicines directorate and the website will have their blue oval logo.

Christ, yes, be careful. Fake Frontline is now killing cats. And the real stuff doesn't kill fleas. If you must buy it then get it from a proper supplier such as Zooplus. But really, save your money. It doesn't work anymore. If your cats don't have fleas it's not because of the treatment - they wouldn't have them anyway.
