My hampster has moved out of his house and set up a nest under his wheel. I don't get it. What should I do?

I cleaned his cage out on saturday and put his house on the top level of his cage. He's refused to sleep in it, even though I've put it where it was before. He's made a nest in the corner of the cage and keps gnawing at the metal bars on the cage. I'm not sure what to do. I have put sawdust and bedding in his house but he hasn't been back.

All 3 of mine tend to make beds elsewhere than where they are meant too. One of them is always swinging from the top bars and chewing on them too.

I though't I stressed him out too much when I cleaned his cage. At least he can't use the wheel now . I wasn't sure if this was normal. Thanks.

Maybe he is downsizing for the credit crunch.

nickytwotimes · 02/06/2008 13:45

lol UD.
Tis normal hamster behavior. mine used to use his house as a loo!

avenanap · 02/06/2008 13:52

Haa. I got a hampster toliet for him so he no longer uses his house as a loo. He does store alot of food in it though. I felt quite bad when he moved out. I thought I'd pissed him off when I moved his house.

It's hamster. No P.

nickytwotimes · 02/06/2008 14:35

UD, get back to Pedants' Corner where you belong.

You're not kidding, lol!

BLONDIEBABE · 02/06/2008 14:38

Our last hamster did this as she got too big for her house.
When we got a new one the ones in the shop were under a roof off a house and nested themselves nothing to worry about.

avenanap · 02/06/2008 14:42

He is getting quite big.

Thanks all. I feel alot better now .

my hamsters used to nest near wheel in summer when it got warmer and build huge 'sand dunes' of straw to bed down in. happened with all 3 of them so don't worry!!

PortBlacksandResident · 02/06/2008 20:00

Getting quite big.

Making a new nest.

Erm........how long have you had her him?

Grin

It's a he. The lady in the shop told us they never sell females. We've had him for 4 months so I'm sure it would have had little ones by now if it was up the duff.

lucyellensmum · 03/06/2008 20:58

um..........leave him there!!!

Bridie3 · 03/06/2008 21:00

Ha Unquietdad!

Our hamsters are always making nests in inappropriate places: usually their loos. Sometimes when it's hot they prefer to sleep on the floor of the cage.

They know what they like.

I've just recovered one of my hamsters from a week of freedom. He escaped and lived behind the cooker. We built increasingly cunning traps and finally caught him. He was a bit dusty but otherwise fine.

DirtySexyMummy · 03/06/2008 21:02

I don't give two shits about the hamster, I'm sure he is fine. However, feel I must point out, there is no P in Hamster.

Thats all, thanks.

Bridie3 · 03/06/2008 21:09

There's also an apostrophe in Thats...

DirtySexyMummy · 03/06/2008 21:12

Oh ho ho, like it!
