Dog anxiety barking

I have a little Pomchi, she is a lovely day however barks constantly when we leave her at home tried both leaving her in the cage and out the cage, it was ok when I was with my partner as we could leave her at his he owned his house whereas I’m rented and my next door neighbour is a nightmare about any tiny noise.
has anyone used any anti barking devices, or any herbal remedies etc to help stop their dog barking.

My neighbour has a yappy little dog, she uses a training collar which squirts citronella after 2 barks.

it was working well but she isn’t consistent with it so o often still get woken up by the little sod.

I think if you’re consistent, ie use an anti bark collar all the time for a couple of weeks, it will get the message and the habit will be broken.

presumably you’ve tried leaving the to or radio on low, left some toys etc when you go out?

In fairness to the next door neighbour who is "a nightmare about the noise" it must be very irritating for him to hear the barking.... Appreciate you are attempting to do something about it now but why wasn't it also annoying to neighbours when you lived in owner occupied? Or was it annoying for them but you didn't feel that you needed to do anything about it?

SpanielsGalore · 10/09/2025 09:41

@Philandbill I imagine she's only bothered now because she can get evicted.

Please don't use aversive training tools on your dog.
Why is she barking? Does she have separation anxiety? If so, you need to work on being able to leave her. Start with a few minutes and work up to longer periods. A spray collar will only add to her stress.
Is she only barking at noises she hears? If so, can you leave a radio on to drown out outside noises?
If she is anxious, then have you sought help to ease her anxiety? A good vet behavourist would be my first port of call.

@Philandbillas I stated me and my ex aprtner have seperated. But we always had seperate houses due to our respective children and our past histories so needed it for stability for our children. If we did days out etc and the dog couldn’t come, or I had appointments the dog would be left at his house because if she barked it wouldn’t matter as he owns his house. I have custody of the dog now and have no choice but to leave her at times. My next door neighbour complains about kids in general making noise in the street, I fell down the stairs she complained, building the kids beds when we moved in she complained. The kids just walking down the stairs on the opposite side of the house she complains

I imagine she's only bothered now because she can get evicted. @SpanielsGalore Given the last post I think you're right.

You could try what I do op…
Leave the radio on and before you go out make the dog lie down where it is most comfortable and calm.
For mine it is on the settee, so I say “up” and after she has jumped onto the settee, I stroke her, tell her I’ll be back soon and also, I leave her with a teeshirt or sweater I have worn recently or whatever I have worn in bed, and place it under her nose and tell her to look after it for me.
I’ve been doing this so long now that she knows the signs of me getting ready to go out and jumps on settee herself and she doesn’t need the teeshirt any more but I always stroke her and have the little talk with her.
I’ve given this advice to quite a few people and it always seems to work, so fingers crossed for you. ❤️

Even though your ex owns his house, leaving a dog to bark all day was incredibly hard for his neighbours as well as the dog.

oh same here, I’ve got a little chihuahua who’s the sweetest thing but totally freaks out when left alone.
I started leaving her with a t-shirt I’ve worn and that helped a bit. I also give her a kong with frozen peanut butter when I go out, kinda keeps her busy for a while.
I also sometimes leave calm music playing in the background, like this one: — not loud, just low volume. There are many different options on YouTube.
not a full fix but it defo reduced the barking a bit. I’m still not sure if the music really works tho, thinking of getting a webcam to check what she does when I’m not home 😅
neighbours still complain sometimes but at least it’s not non-stop anymore.

Oh bless her, that sounds really hard. I saw an article in the Daily Express about a dog who got loads better after being given a kind of mushroom extract. The website it can help calm dogs down too. Might be worth a look?
