Two kittens- siblings but what sex

We plan to get cats, sadly we have been refused at all of all our local rehoming centres, as my preference was adult cats, because we have small children. But now we are looking into sibling kittens, is there any preferable sex mix for getting on well and do temperaments differ with male vs female or is it just the cats themselves?

I'd get two female kittens. From my experience they are less vocal. Get them neutered.
DCat is quiet but will ask to be let out or have some food.
Previous cat was a neutered male and very bossy. He was beautiful.

I have two sisters - since they were 8 weeks and now 7 years old.

They have the occasional play fight but otherwise are lovely and no issues.

I went for girls on the assumption they would be less territorial/fewer issues with spraying before getting spayed etc. I know some people who say boy cats are more affectionate but our girls are very cuddly - possibly because they're indoor cats.

I had an MF sibling pair and they never ever hung out together or spent time in the same room as eachother at all once they were a few months old.

On the other hand I have two boys now who aren't siblings and they are always side by side. They love cuddling, licking and grooming eachother and look out for eachother when out. It's really sweet to watch!

So I'd go with two boys based on my own limited experience. Girls are worse at the vets usually as well in terms of anxiety apparently I've heard.

I have one of each and they are very close.

Aubrielle · 30/08/2025 19:40

We've been a multi cat household for many years, we've had males and females. I'd recommend males. They are calmer, more laid back and more affectionate.
We had two Maine Coon litter brothers who were very close throughout their life. By contrast our littermate females hated each other and there was constant friction between them.

We had M/F siblings and they really, really didn’t get on. At all.

We now have a mum and son. Who also don’t get on 😬😁.

We have 2 sisters. Got them from a rescue @10weeks. They used to snuggle when they were little bit they now seem to actively dislike each other. They each have their own 'spot' at completely opposite ends if they house and on the odd occasion they pass each other on the way to the kitchen it usually involves some hissing and paw swiping.

I have two males kittens from different litters and they are so bonded, it is beautiful

I have a boy and a girl, since kittens. They get on really well and are completely different characters (the boy is quite needy with us and a snoozy homebody and the go is a bit more independent, goes out mousing etc). If I was doing it again I'd definitely get boy and girl again

You’ll have to get them neutered/spayed and IME getting a female kitten spayed was more stressful than her brother being neutered. I think it was also more expensive, which didn’t bother me, but she was not a happy camper and for about a week it was like having a newborn! She refused to eat or drink, stuck to me like glue day and night and was being spoon and syringe fed and put in the litter tray. Vet said she was just upset about the post-op suit and not actually ill. Of course, she may just have really taken it badly and very much not liked the suit, but if ever I get kittens again, my heart couldn’t take having caused all that upset and not being able to explain why it was a good thing - so two little fellas!

Pepperama · 31/08/2025 01:34

We’ve had female sisters who got in really well - made sure they had separate food bowls but they shared a litter tray. Different characters altogether which was great. One cuddly lapcat who hated rain, and one daredevil hunter who loved the outdoors

Slowgrowingelm · 31/08/2025 01:41

I have a brother and I sister. From the age of around 2 they hated each other on sight. They’re almost 8 now and that hasn’t diminished. I don’t think it matters what combination you get re sex but I don’t believe that litter siblings naturally get along after a certain point.

Thanks everyone, really interesting, it sounds completely down to personality. Those with calm cuddly cats, did anything stand out as you were picking them. My last cat was a single female and she was feral, never gentle, a natural hunter and I feel I picked the boldest cat and maybe I should be looking for a shyer kitten next time. This was many years ago and my children never met her.

I would absolutely avoid shy, I'd look for bold and friendly. A kitten that comes to you rather than shying away.
Our two brothers were both confident kittens; the breeder said the black boy had been the first kitten to explore the room. He was exceptionally intelligent but more active and playful. His blue brother came straight to me and sat on my lap. He was always calmer, very cuddly, but again confident and bold, both always greeted visitors to our home, whereas one of our girls would hide from strangers. She was a shy, timid kitten and never really became cuddly.

I've had 2 sets of sisters. Both times they were so lovely and bonded until about 2 years old when they decided they couldn't stand each other.

Espressoicecream · 31/08/2025 09:02

We recently bought two kittens for the exact same reason as you - no rehoming centre would allow us an adult cat.

We bought what we thought were two girls - very playful and loving.

Took them to the vets - they're both boys 🤣

Really i think the sex is much of a muchness as long as the kittens are siblings. Ive always found boys more affectionate, and less likely to bring small presents home but that's just my experience!

We have two sisters. One adores the other, but the other loathes her sister. Absolute loathing.

Previously we had a brother/sister pair who slept together most of the time.

whatohwhattodo · 01/09/2025 12:58

I’ve had just got two girls - my boy cat from existing pair of the one that has fights with other cats in the garden so I’m hoping for less medical bills.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/09/2025 22:27

I had two sisters that I was told were inseparable. They were if frightened, but as soon as they settled in with me. They were not close. One was very dominant and bossy. When she died her sister absolutely blossomed. She was much happier with the new cat. Who was a huge personality but never dominated her.
