Rehome or take him with

Hello all, we have a grehound and he is family. However, we have planned to move to the US next year this time. I am stressed about how I will take him as the flight time itself is 10 hrs and he will be 12yrs next year. He is healthy as of now by Gods grace.

I get teary thinking about what I should do. I wont be able to sleep if I leave him here but also I wont be able to sleep if something bad happens to him in the cargo space.

He has a whole conservatory for himself so not crate trained. I am ready to buy a giant crate and train and pay what the pet travel comany is asking (£4000). I am not rich at all and I need to save foe this but that is not my issue.
I just dont know what to do with him. 😢
Please put in yoir thoughts.

oh dear,
do you have trusted relatives you can possibly leave him with?

OhNoNotSusan · 27/08/2025 18:29

otherwise would a vet sedate him?

Levriers · 27/08/2025 18:30

I wouldn’t be going whilst hes still here

PamIsAVolleyballChamp · 27/08/2025 18:31

Why are you moving?

OneNaiceSnail · 27/08/2025 18:31

He’d be coming with me. It’ll be all over within a day. I couldn’t abandon a 12yo dog

Dunnocantthinkofone · 27/08/2025 18:36

In all honesty, I’d postpone moving until after his death.
I know that’s not necessarily easy or what you want to hear but no way would I abandoned him and it’s not really fair to put him through the travel either.
If I was faced with absolutely zero choice, I’d have to transport him I suppose. Why are you going?

Cluelessever · 27/08/2025 18:37

I dont have any family in this country. Sadly.
We are moving for better oppurtunity and it has come suddenly. Husband says I am thinking too much and he will be ok. But l the questions..
But will he be?..
What if the vet says he cant fly?
I thought we are settled here bought a house and all...but never thought we will be moving abroad in our mid 40s.

Take him with you. Speak to your vet - I'm sure they can prescribe something that will sedate him (not necessarily a sedative as such, but some painkillers are used as anti-anxiety medication and/or have a strong sedative side effect).

PamIsAVolleyballChamp · 27/08/2025 18:39

Is one of you American? Do you have all the visas/housing/jobs/school in place?

Dunnocantthinkofone · 27/08/2025 18:40

Will similar opportunities still exist in a year or two?

Cluelessever · 27/08/2025 18:44

Husband is going first and after a year I plan to join him. I do understand few of you saying say goodbye and go, but also it IS terrible plan to go after his is gone ( actually waiting for that to happen).
Sigh.

I couldn't go without him - like you say - he is family. Wouldn't be so bad if you could explain it all to him - I am sure being a Greyhound he is a sensitive soul! But no - I would be forking out the money and investigating the best way to get him there - the most trustworthy airlines, best route including whether he could go on a shorter flight and you could drive to collect him, training him in the crate etc! This is all as long as he is good health (for travel). If not I just wouldn't go!! What a situation to be in. Also, I would be going sooner rather than later if he is in good health (as he is getting older).

mrsrobin · 27/08/2025 19:16

I would also be looking into this!!

*Ignore this - just read Greyhounds are on the list of breeds they can't take (due to size) :(

same….

FeistyFrankie · 27/08/2025 20:12

OP take him with you. He will be fine in cargo. Lots of airlines deal with pets. It is perfectly safe - just make sure that he has all the necessary jabs, shots and paperwork, and research the most pet-friendly airlines to travel with.

Cluelessever · 27/08/2025 20:13

Preponing seems to be an idea...
I also saw bark air.. luxury!, the tickets are £6500 for dog+human but I need to book 2 as I have my daughter with me ( and there is no seperate seat for just human), £14000, It is almost not affordale for me, I wish I was richer 😓

We have the same plans. My poor little dog died last year, he was 10, so I had the same concerns. I'd take him with you. Ask the vet about it now, though, since the move is inevitable so no surprises putting you in an awkward position last minute.

But presumably your DH will be coming back on holiday sometime, and will want to plan his holiday to coincide with your move. Surely he would fly over to the US with your daughter on the normal plane and you take the Bark Air with the dog - presumably 6500 isn’t that much more than the 4000 for taking him in the hold plus what your ticket would otherwise cost.
I do know of another example of someone who emigrated to the US with an older dog (in the hold) and they had quite a few good years with him before he died, so taking him was very much worth it.

Sowingbees · 28/08/2025 08:33

Does he have to go in hold? I thought American airlines allowed pets in flight

caramac04 · 28/08/2025 08:56

I couldn’t leave my dog in all honesty but as my oldest one is 15 I would have to postpone as she is getting a bit frail. Saying that she sleeps an awful lot anyway.
Even if your dog only lives a year after moving it would be worth it.
Greyhounds sleep a fair bit and I’m sure will manage the journey fine.
Daft question maybe - will dog manage the flight without a wee? My dogs would manage 12 hours but that would be something I’d need to look at if in that situation.

indoorplantqueen · 28/08/2025 09:14

I would never leave my dog. I’d postpone or find a way to take him in the best and safest way.

Cluelessever · 28/08/2025 11:41

Thankyou all :). Grateful to all the ideas and emotional understnding.

On the wee, he can if he sleeps most if the travel. The main thing I need to do is to crate train him 6months before as he isnt crate trained and apparently the bed of the crate is raised a bit so that the dog wont sleep on it. I will also use absorbant material. I am planning to work with the pet company on all things.

Hopefully Issac will be fit to fly and he seems to be in good health as of now🤞🏼

Take him with. I’m planning to take my dog abroad also who will be a similar age. If vet clears them to travel, no problem.

I am also insanely worried about it though, but friends who have done it have said the dogs have been fine.

This. We have lived abroad, never left an animal
behind.
