Cat pooing on astro turf

Springhare76 · 25/08/2025 10:56

We had astro put down in our garden 2 years ago as we have a small garden and couldn't get grass to grow. The astro has made the space so much more usable, however, our cat uses it as a toilet and just won't be deterred. Every morning we go down and there is a massive pile of crap in the middle of it. I've tried various powders, chilli etc but nothing stops him. It's making the lawn unusable as it's always covered in shit. Any ideas how to stop him?

Where are you expecting him to go? We have a dog and you just pick up after them?

Dabberlocks · 25/08/2025 11:00

Put a litter tray there for the cat to use.

He's not a dog though, he's a cat. Cats usually bury their poo. We have a few soil areas with a tree and plants where I was hoping he would go. Loads of surrounding gardens with soil.

Tried that and it worked for a bit then he started using the astro again.

I think your cat might possibly be expressing his disdain for AstroTurf.

I think so too!

Find a spare corner of the garden and remove some astroturf from there. Swap it with the bit the cat is using. With luck, the smell of continued use on that piece of turf will encourage it to use the same piece. Only now it is out of the way.

Get rid of the plastic grass and buy some turf??

DancefloorAcrobatics · 25/08/2025 18:27

So, you don't want to pick up your own pets shit, but expect your neighbours to do so? That's disgusting!

I just knew some eager keyboard warrior would jump on that. You can't resist a telling off can you? If you have a cat you will know that you can't stop then pooing where they like. If he choses to poo in someone else's garden then that's up to him. My comment clearly said that nearly all neighbours have bigger SOIL gardens where the cat would obviously bury his poo which is can't go on astro. I was simply saying that he has other options not just the astro.

Thanks you. I did just that - cut out a large corner of the astro, put soil down and planted a tree. He pooed there for a bit then went back to the astro.

Cat does have other options, but he's chosen to ignore them 😬

I might have to but it's a very small garden and the grass struggled to grow there so would have to be paving which is what we had before, or a mud and poo bath. Maybe he would poo on the paving too.

@Springhare76 let me remind you that you wrote:

Yet you think that because your neighbours have SOIL, they should be dealing with your cats shit.
Do you believe that they want their gardens always covered in shit ?

And yes, a happy keyboard warrior.that isn't a fan of cats and their entitled owners!

Ethelflaedofmercia · 30/08/2025 20:56

Get a litter tray and just train him. I have a cat also and I trained mine so she poops in her tray and not on other peoples property

It's a fact that cats poo where they like. There is nothing entitled in recognising a fact.

Is there a problem with picking it up like people do for their dog poo?

Are you sure it’s actually your cat’s shit?

Surely it’s preferable that your cat shits in your garden, rather than someone else’s?

afuckinggoat · 02/09/2025 15:52

Why is it better for a cat to bury its poo in your neighbours' gardens though? There is a neighbour cat that has been using one of my raised beds as a toilet. Sometimes it just poos on the soil, sometimes it disrupts my carrots, and sometimes it does bury the poo, which is absolutely disgusting to discover when I am digging to transfer from pots.

As you say, cats poo where they like. Your cat likes pooing on your astroturf. Which is a fitting punishment for your installing of the environmentally tragic plastic grass, and for your selfish, unneighbourly attitude.

You are very invested and het up about where a cat shits. Maybe not a lot going on in your life perhaps other than your carrots? Do you condemn all cat owners for where their cats poo? Also, I assume you practice what you preach and model environmentally friendly behaviour including not driving, not eating meat, not flying etc? Otherwise you are a massive hypocrite.

Don't really care where he poos provided he buries it as cats usually do.
