Hi
I am ttc and there is a chance I may be pregnant.
We do have a kitten and I have no choice but to clean out its litter tray has there is nobody else to do it.
Is there anybody else on here in the same situation.
I have worn gloves but it does concern me a bit.

It'll be fine - don't get stressed.

tryingtocookacurry · 28/05/2008 17:31

you will be fine. I have cats and although they don't use a litter tray, they do go in the garden borders and when gardening I just ensured I wore gloves and washed my hands thoroughly.

i had to deal with my cat all through my pregnancy it is fine as long as you clean hands straight after normally dont getin with the poos anyway just keep doing what your doing

i was fine

I asked my doctor because I was worried about the litter tray when I was pregnant. He got out a book and showed me the facts and figures to reassure me that the risks are really very small and that normal common-sense precautions (gloves etc) are sufficient.

nailpolish · 28/05/2008 19:24

using gloves and then washing with normal soap and water is fine

i am a nurse and i stick my (gloved) hands in all manner of shit and puke, most infected, we just use normal soap and water (as directed by microbiology, anti bac stuff is not necessary) and its fine

dont worry

I used gloves when pregnant with DS.

If you are really worried, in Wilkinsons they sell scented cat litter liners (q cheap, 15 for 79p). They are quite large so hang well over the lip of the litter tray.

I used to put newspaper in as well b/c my cat used to scratch through the liner. I also used to put in less litter b/c it was all being thrown out every day in the liner.

You only have to worry if your cat has worms. If you use a multi wormer from the vet called Drontal, it lasts 6 months and kills all worms. You can then safely deal with litter.

Big chunk of text lifted from reliable website...main message is wash hands and don't worry too much

Cat faeces can carry a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, an infection that isn't serious for you but can pose a danger to your developing baby.

Some birds and other animals, as well as some raw, cured or undercooked meats, can also carry the parasite. Toxoplasmosis causes most severe damage to the fetus if a woman comes down with it in her first trimester.

Happily, the odds of contracting toxoplasmosis during pregnancy are low, and if you've had it once, you can't catch it again. What's more, it's rare for a woman to be infected for the first time during pregnancy and some experts argue that you're much more likely to catch it from eating raw, undercooked or cured meat than from your cat. Plus, if you live with cats, the likelihood is even higher that you've already contracted the disease and developed an immunity to it. Read our article on toxoplasmosis for more information.

Experts recommend that pregnant women should avoid emptying the cat litter tray. Ideally it should be cleared every day by someone else. If you have to do it yourself, always wear rubber gloves and wash both your hands and the gloves thoroughly afterwards.

Wear gloves when you're gardening and handling soil or sand, too, to cut down the risk of infection from cat and animal faeces. Always wash your hands before preparing or handling food and be very strict about food hygiene.

There is a blood test which can show whether you have had toxoplasmosis. If you are worried, speak to your GP about it.

I have 3 cats and am pregnant with my third baby. Throughout every pregnancy I have cleaned the cat litter tray daily (well apart from weekends when DP does it) I also have to go "fishing" after one of them has been to the toilet it's either that or the whole downstairs stinks of s* until DP gets home (cat litter trays in back of large cupboard in kitchen, is a covered one but it still stinks).

My cats are indoor cats so no worm issues although they are still wormed yearly just in case. Every day I empty the trays completely into a bag spray with Dettol spray and put more litter in, then wash my hands thoroughly. Chances are I am already immune to toxoplasmosis as have been around animals since I was v young. You have to ingest infected cat poo (not like you are going to be eating it really), for it to be infected with toxo and you not to have immunity, then it's got to cross the placenta and infect the babies brain to cause damage, all in all theres a
