My Labrador's getting spayed on Monday

She's 6 months old that day, it's the youngest they do them from and I found out it's best to get them done before their first season now.

Anyways, what should I expect on the day? I've been told no food from 7 the night before and to lift her water bowl up before we come to bed. She needs to be there between 8.30 and 9 in the morning but then what?

I know I want it done but I'm still nervous about it. Will we get phone calls to update us on how she's doing? When is she likely to come out? When will she be able to eat again? Should we take some of her food in just incase?

I know I should really call them up again but the receptionist isn't that good, the vet's lovely though and that's why we're still going there.

If its like our vets YOu will sign a consent form then she will go through, she probbaly won't be the only one and you will be asked to phone up at a certain time and then given a time to pick her up. After an op we always give boiled chicken and scrambled eggs/rice. She will still be a bit dopwy will be given medication and asked to make an appointment for a check up.

You will drop her off after the no food rule-probably around 9am.
Don't expect to hear anything till at least 1pm.You will get a call in the afternoon saying pickher up after 4pm.It is traumatic for us owners but tbh it is like clipping toenails for vets.
Please don't worry, she wil be fine.
She may be a little sleepy/lethargic for a while and she will be a little sore but it is best in the long run.
She will be fine-honest!

A big kerfuffle to be honest. Its a very straighforward op.
Yes chicken and rice the next day if you wish but their normal food will not harm them.
They may have acollar on if they chew at the stitches and that can be a pain and lead walk only for a couple of weeks. Check up a week latyer and thats it.

Don't worry she will be fine xxx

Thankyou

She's my 3rd child so it's heartbreaking but I know it needs to be done and you're right vets must do this all the time but it's still a worry when I think she's never been anaesthetised so how will she cope?

I really hope she's not in too much pain afterwards I know animals seem to cope better than people with pain but I know I'll be so worried about her.

I think I'll give her some of those home cooked foods which I know she'll love more and then at least I'll feel like I'm doing my part in helping her

The great thing is that animals only feel real pain-they don't feel the pain we suggest they should be feeling and they also do not expect to feel pain-thus when they show symptoms of pain it should be taken seriously but they don't play on it-Like toddlers

My puppy had this done at 6 months too. SHe was a bit drowsy and wobbly when we picked her up and for the rest of that day and was a little quiet the day after but then really bounced back and we had a job to keep her quiet!

Didn't seem to be in much pain at all (the vet nurse said she had been given a piankilling injection just before she came home.) The stitches she had were all inside, except for the knots at each end and she licked it a bit to start with.

Hope it al goes ok. Try not to worry- it's very straight forward.

Don't worry, she will be fine. Young fit dogs cope very well with anaesthetics and she'll be given long acting painkillers at the vets so her pain should be minimal. You are doing the right thing - not only preventing unwanted puppies but also drastically reducing her chances of mammary tumours in later life. It is honestly a very routine operation and done hundreds of times every day!

She's doing well

She's moaning a bit, tired but she's eating chicken and has been drinking water. She has a head collar for overnight. The scar is so tiny and neat

She has a checkup in 3 days and again in 10. Such a relief it's all over and done with and she's doing well

Having a hard time trying to stop her running about and jumping. If it wasn't for the shaved patch and scar nobody would know she's just had an operation. I'm so glad she's doing this well, it's such a relief

Glad to hear she's doing so well - you must be relieved! V. important to keep her as quiet as you can (not easy, I know), as it's a hysterectomy at the end of the day.

Keep on with the TLC!
