Any vets in the house?

My DD stepped on the cat this afternoon and the poor soul started making a clicking sound with the teeth.
After a few minutes he stopped but he wants to be left alone, although he is ok if I pick him up.
What precautions do I need to take and what observations warrant a visit to the after hours vet?
TIA

How heavily did she stand on him? I appreciate that out of hours vets are extortionately costed (our vet uses Vets Now who charge £375 to walk through the door) but I don't think I could leave him without a check over and some painkiller if he needs it. Have you got a vet service via your insurance? We used to have First Vet and they were very good, they did a video call. I think you can use that and pay as you go?

What part of his body did she step on

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 18/07/2025 21:19

Possibly the torso, se doesn’t know as she was not looking. As for the standing she got herself a huge scratch on the foot so definitely there was reaction time there from the cat. We have pet plan as insurance so I think I might take him tomorrow morning.

great you’ve got pet plan, give them a call

yes out of hours appointment charges can be a fortune but can be cheaper if organised through your insurance

hope he’s ok

How old is your dd, if she's got a deep scratch she may need to get it checked, claws carry a lot of bacteria. Is poor cat breathing normally, eating OK, can you see any swelling anyway, using litter tray ok.

She is 11, the cat is a house cat, he does not go out. He seems to be doing better now, more alert, using the litter ray and eating pouch treats.

You need to get him checked over. Cats are very very stoical. I didn’t know my cat was dying of cancer until it was very advanced. The day before he died he was eating well and trying to leap up the garden fence! My current cat I’ve just had at the vet who has told me that she’s had two teeth reabsorbed since her last checkup and that this will have been really painful. We had no idea. No change in behaviour at all. So given this and the fact that you heard a clicking and he was avoiding everyone for a period you definitely need to get him to a vet to be checked. Call your insurers.

I would wait until the morning, he’s eating drinking and using the litter tray. He may need to see a vet but he doesn’t need one tonight.
I was listening to a programme on radio 4 and there was a vet saying most animals can wait until morning and don’t need to see an out of hours vet.

Thanks all for your input. I will take him tomorrow morning.

Our cat gets stood on/fallen over all the time - not to victim blame, but he’s a right bugger for racing you through an open door and getting under foot. He usually gives a yowl (or a hiss) if he’s hurt, might sulk for a wee bit, then knows he will get a snack for his troubles.

I agree that cats can mask pain well but unless the cat is hiding away/not eating etc I would just keep an eye on him. I stood on our boy’s front paw once and the wail he gave was other-worldly. I was set to bring him to the vet after seeing him sit sadly with it held up - until he went racing out the back door after a pigeon.
