My cat has grey lumpy bits on her face. Anyone know what they are?

She has one near her ear & one on the side of her face. They are like little growths & kind of grey in colour.

ticks possibly - take her to the vet

Pinkchampagne · 26/05/2008 19:28

Oh no, another vet visit! She is a nightmare to get to the vets!

take her to the vet, if they're on her face it'll be too hard to do the job yourself

Pinkchampagne · 26/05/2008 19:40

Thank you. I am still very new to the world of cats. I adopted her after my Nan died last summer, having not had pets before.
I know nothing of these tic things, so may sound stupid here, but what are they?

Don't try to burn/smother them. The best, safest way to remove them is to use a tick remover like this

Pinkchampagne · 26/05/2008 19:42

Ewww, don't like the sound of those at all!!

Oh god, brings back a memory for me i would rather forget, take the cat to the vets (trust me).

Vile things ticks,

Pinkchampagne · 26/05/2008 19:44

Reading about them has made my skin crawl! I won't be trying to remove them myself, so looks like it will be a trip to the vets!

Ticks are very common in cats and usually don't cause serious problems. Left alone, they will fall off after a few days when they have fed sufficiently. However, they are best removed - ideally with a tick remover - at home or by a vet/nurse. It is a very simple job and one I have had to do several times in the last week! Don't worry about them but phone your veterinary surgery in the morning. To prevent her getting more, pick up some Frontline while you are there.

What is a tick remover? I am starting to shudder at the thought of how these things are removed!!

Haven't phoned vets yet as had to take DS to an appt this morning, but will phone up tomorrow as according to my friend, the ticks are pretty big.

A tick remover is like a little hook with a slot in. You hold the hook against the animal's skin, slide the tick into the slot and turn it a few times. This makes the tick's mouthparts let go and you get the whole creature out in one piece.

Also meant to say that as you haven't been to the vets yet, there is a pretty high chance it will have fallen off before you get there.

LuckySalem · 27/05/2008 22:25

Ticks!! - They are bugs which feed on the blood of the animals they "infest"

I would take her to the vets if its on her face and you have no experience but there are special tick removers you can get or if you have help and feel upto it, burn the blighter off.

DO NOT PULL IT OFF - It'll leave the mouth parts in the cat and then get infected.

LuckySalem · 27/05/2008 22:26

oh we always burn them off and never had ANY problems with our cats skin!

Pinkchampagne · 27/05/2008 22:27

Ewwwww, don't like the sound of that! I have gone all goose bumpy at the thought of the creature coming out!!

get her frontlned. this will cause the ticks to die within 24 hours of latching on. get it from vets. a big infestation can cause aneamia. i use the tick remover as advised earlier in post.
