I need to re-home my dog - where to start?

We've come to the unhappy decision that the dog needs to go - dd1 and I are both hugely allergic to him (he triggers asthma and I'm now on much stronger drugs), dh works abroad all week and ds - who was the one who really wanted him - never spends time with him without being forced. Because of our wheezing the poor thing rarely makes it past the kitchen and it's so unfair on him. (I was against a dog in the first place for all the above reasons but dh brought him home as a surprise without even telling me.)
Where do I start finding him a new home? He's nearly 3 and a neutered black lab.

you could try labrador rescue.

SwissCheese · 26/05/2008 13:37

Labrador retriever rescue trust. I have heard that they may have a waiting list for dogs needing rehoming, but def worth a try. Also you could think about using epupz website as a possible avenue.

Ask your local vet for advice. They should know about local rehoming centres. Or the RSPCA.

Thank you - I feel really bad about this, but it's the fairest thing for the dog.

I think you're doing the best thing. Dogs need lots of love and attention and you and your DD need to be healthy.

We are after a labrador, not sure if it is the right time as we are just moving house atm, but if he is good with children that would be brill...are you far away from us? We are in the South East.

WonderingWhy · 26/05/2008 14:12

On the other hand I could go for Micci25's little yappy bastard dog instead

The Blue Cross or Dogs' Trust may be able to help:

www.dogstrust.org.uk/

You're definitely doing the best thing for the dog. Good luck.

Are you near to Battersea Dogs' Home? They will always accept an animal, at any time. I took a cat there once in the middle of the night. I trust them to rehome animals sensibly. Or if you are further north, Manchester have a big home too.

Romy7 · 28/05/2008 10:54

Did you sign a contract with the breeder? Sometimes you are obliged to offer them back to the breeder in the first instance?

micci25 · 28/05/2008 11:08

hahaha wonderwhy, i was going to suggest something but since you are all still being nasty about my dog i leave......

hvae you asked friends, family if they would be willing to have the dog? re homing centers usually have really long waiting lists and the dogs are left there a long time sometimes. when we had a stray cat we advertised in free mag and interviewed people to ensure she was going to a good home. she ended up with a lovely old lady who used to let us visit the cat (i think it was her she wanted us visit really, she was very lonely)

plus you will all be pleased to know that i slept (layed in while she kicked me all night) in dd1s bed last night which is right above the dog and can safely say that the dog did not bark not even once all night long. nor did she bark much yesterday. there was a point where i was in the kitchen and she heard next door in thier yard having a sneaky fag but i closed the backdoor. i really truely do think that her barking is in dp's head

Blue Cross are very caring and helpful, ime.

laura032004 · 28/05/2008 11:12

I've seen dogs advertised on Gumtree and Freecycle, so at least people would be local, and you could meet them.

milkybarsrus · 29/05/2008 08:51

Hi, i was only looking on the rescue centres websites last night for a lab. Where abouts are you please? and is your dog very good with kids, mine are 2, 11 and 14?
