Why do you have a dog?

pinkglitter12 · 04/07/2025 11:05

Ok this might seem strange but it's a genuine question. I've been wondering for a long time why people choose to have dogs.
I understand there's dogs that support disabilities but wouldnt another human be better instead?

The cons

Picking up smelly poop.
Being tied to the house.
Vet appointments and fees
Dog smell
Extra cleaning
Commiting to walk daily, I personally dont think this is a bad thing but I'm sure it would become an inconvenience now and then.
Unpredictable behaviour
Fleas/worms/mites
Smelly dog food

I'm struggling to find the pros

Encouragment to exercise

I grew up on a cat street and the only dog on the road was a bull mastiff that barked at me and tried to jump the fence every day as I was walking to primary school. All my experience with dogs have been awful, standing in poop, getting dog diarrhea splashed all over me whilst pushing a pram, being chased and bit.

Genuinely curious why people have dogs?

I don't know why people want to have dogs, children OR a man.

Cat is king 🤴🏻

Dogs are just ace.

No, you said doglovers would 'not necessarily view' picking up dog poo and expensive vet bills etc as negatives. I don't think that's true. It's just that the positives outweigh them.

Exactly! Note the word necessarily there. Stop taking my words out of context and twisting them to suit your own agenda of justifying why you don't want a dog.

I personally do not view these things as negatives. I don't think I am alone in that. They are just a part of dog ownership. Not all dog people see them in a negative way. That was all I said. If you don't agree then fine but don't twist what I said to suit your narrative.

I don't disagree. I'm a cat person. My dog is an honorary cat 😁

Because our floofy boy brought my son back to life after his father arranged to pick him up one Easter, didn't show, left the country and never contacted him again.

The thing about dog haters that start threads like this is the fact that they imagine our dogs are just a poor substitute for a human. They are convinced that loving our dog makes us incapable of forming relationships with people. It is quite absurd. I don't think of my dog as a human any more than I think of my husband as a dog... 😏

I dont think thats a fair assumption in my case. I dont hate dogs at all. A phobia maybe? Im actually reading all these comments and learning a lot!
I always see happy people with dogs, i have zero experience at all, no family members have them, I have friends who do but I'm sad to say they always keep us apart because of the way I am
Dogs mostly bark at me, I've heard they smell fear.

Well she lives with me because the people (friends of a friend) who bought her as a puppy decided they didn't want her because she's deaf, and were going to have her put down. So I said she could come to me.

She's funny, she's clever, she's learnt basic sign language, she lip reads, she's brave, she's a knobhead, I love her. She's a little white terrier and looks like Snowy from Tintin. She's my best little buddy. I just wish she could live as long as I will, because when she's gone I'll miss her forever.

I have a service dog, and I can assure you he is nicer than many humans I come across.

But the answer is no. I have multiple disability part of which is PTSS. His senses are much better than any humans to the extent that he can detect physical changes in me before even I can, never mind some other human. He not only alerts me to this but acts to counter the development of an attack, to the point where I have not had a full blown attack in 6 /7 years.

Oh, and I am genuinely struggling to think of any reason to like you, but I won't post about it, honest.

stayathomer · 04/07/2025 16:38

We honestly only got him because he had the saddest eyes and I wanted to make him happy (god that sounds sappy!). He’s a rogue and an idiot but his tail never stops wagging and he’d literally just sit happily next to me all day if I had the time to sit there.

If your thread was made from a genuine curiosity then I apologise for what I said.
I'm sorry you have fear of dogs and I always try to be mindful of the fact that not everyone is comfortable around dogs, particularly larger breeds like mine.

However, I'm a great believer that there is a perfect dog for almost everybody. If you find the breed that is right for you it is wonderful. They enrich your life so much.
I hope someday you'll meet a dog that you aren't afraid of and can at least make friends with, even if you don't want to share your life with one. They're not all barky, smelly and slobbery.

DesperatelySeekingHelp · 04/07/2025 16:58

Our house is literally a different household than before we got her. Everyone is happy all the time now Smile

Mingenious · 04/07/2025 17:01

Companionship
Complete adoration
A reason to exercise
They’re funny as fuck 😆

My dog is clean, doesn’t smell, isn’t destructive, is well behaved - both at home and on walks, loves everyone, gets on with everything. His only downfall is he rather likes the sound of his own voice but that’s well managed and he isn’t given the opportunity to piss anyone off. He’s an excellent guard dog.

Peanut91 · 04/07/2025 17:21

Unconditional love, long walks, encouraging the kids to be outdoors. Dogs are the most wonderful addition to the family and our house felt completely empty after we lost our old dog last summer.

MovingOnMovingOn · 04/07/2025 17:22

Because i couldn't live without her (not really but almost)

terracelane23 · 04/07/2025 17:23

We live near a large forest and our hobby is hiking. Our dogs fit in with that perfectly. I do understand the downsides though and they are very restricting so they are not for everyone.

Ylvamoon · 04/07/2025 17:43

PRO:

always there if I need a cuddle
mine are great at motivating & calming DC when out and about
Great in winter, mine serve as hot water bottles
I chat to people because of my dogs (as they are exceptionally beautiful!)
Mine are a hobby, we do k9 sports, great suppotive community, made lots of friends and meet like minded people.

I don't mind the smell, picking poop or extra cleaning. So it's not a con.
Vets, wormes and fleas is just part of owning a dog, with a good routine it's a non issue. I mean a bit of treatment ever so often and a routine vet visit every 12 months isn't a big issue.

Same as for being tied to the house. Not an issue as I can leave them or take them with me. I don't mind leaving early or getting to an venue late if it means the dogs are OK.
Holidays abroad however are the real con for me!

Verdict: having dogs is a lifestyle choice for me.

AcquadiP · 04/07/2025 18:15

Picking up smelly poop - you get used to it.

Being tied to the house - you can leave the house for 4 or 5 hours at a time (unless it's a puppy.) Yes, it requires sacrifices but that's part of the commitment to owning a dog.

Vet appointments and fees - unless you are very unlucky, a healthy dog won't need anything other than routine treatment until the very end of its life. Life insurance is available or savings. I rarely buy takeaways; and I never buy coffees on my way to work or purchase food at work. The money saved goes into a savings account for vet fees.

Dog smell - dogs don't smell if their bedding is washed frequently; and they're given an occasional bath.

Extra cleaning - it goes with the territory.

Exercise with your dog - walking is great physical exercise, it's free, it's excellent for your mental health and for making new dog-owning friends. It also builds a strong relationship with your dog. When you have a dog you have outdoor clothing and footwear to cover every type of weather.

Unpredictable behaviour - a puppy is unpredictable and a very old dog with Canine Dementia can be unpredictable. However, a well-trained, adult dog is highly predictable, so long as you put the obedience work in, learn to read it's body language and build a solid relationship with your dog built on mutual affection and respect.

Fleas/worms/mites - fleas and worms are easily prevented with tablets. No dog should have mites, this indicates neglect - a clean environment with clean bedding prevents mites.

Smelly dog food - a good quality, complete dry food doesn't smell. Wet dog food does smell but that's a matter of personal choice.

"I'm struggling to find the pros"

  • There is nothing on this planet as loving, loyal and discrete as a dog.
  • Dogs are highly entertaining. My dog makes me laugh all the time with her antics.
  • Dogs are protective. Their sense of hearing and scent is thousands of times greater than that of a human being. Your dog will growl and/or bark if someone so much as approaches your car or front door. Furthermore, your dog's vocalisation will make that person aware that a dog lives at that property and that your dog is aware of their presence. A would be burglar or thief won't hang about, they'll move onto an easier target. The peace of mind a dog provides is priceless. It doesn't even have to be a dog traditionally associated with guarding. My Black Labrador for example - who had an excellent temperament - was one of the best guard dogs I've ever owned.
  • Dogs are excellent judges of character. If your normally friendly, level-headed, well- trained dog acts cold or generally out of character towards someone, you can trust that that person is someone to be very wary of.

This is just off the top of my head and not a comprehensive list by any means!

ScratCat · 04/07/2025 18:19

Because clean floors are overrated?

Actually, that’s the only downside I can think of. Dogs enhance our lives in every possible way. They ask for nothing yet give back in spades. We had 6 or 7 weeks between our beloved old dog dying and our new pup arriving and it was a very sad and empty house indeed. But it was really clean.

Mumofyellows · 04/07/2025 18:31

I have two. They are loyal, affectionate, make the walks I love in the countryside even more enjoyable and are the reason I want to get out of bed when I am having a hard time.
I also have horses and have owned cats, rabbits, guinea pigs...dogs win all round ❤️

ChocolateGanache · 04/07/2025 18:34

My dog is a darling!

She’s beautiful, funny, loving, excitable, gentle, calming, smells divine, cuddly, fun, good exercise, adoring, soft, perfect really.

I had ALWAYS wanted a dog. Now I have one. And I ADORE her!

The DH and kids are great too 🤷🏻‍♀️

ChocolateGanache · 04/07/2025 18:36

Frankly I find people who don’t like dogs a bit odd.

The dogs want to please us, the cats want us to please them! 😆

GlastoNinja · 04/07/2025 18:37

Because life without one is empty.

They’re fun, loving, brilliant company a member of the family. They bring something to your life which is hard to describe but I feel sad for people who don’t have that.

Letstheriveranswer · 04/07/2025 18:38

I'm with you, I don't get it. I grew up with dogs and do quite like dogs but don't feel any need to own one. I don't want to have to be out the door walking a dog within minutes of waking up, out in all weathers, picking up poop and not being able to go away or go out for a few hours.

Lately it seems like everyone in my neighbourhood has got dogs and they all take turns to bark endlessly for hours on end. Bloody selfish owners!

Ontheedgeofit · 04/07/2025 18:40

To second a previous poster. It is the only relationship where you get out more than you put in. They don’t ask questions and do not judge you.
