I got a dog today His name is Giles and he's 16 months. He's absolutely gorgeous.
Anyway, I have petplan insurance for 4 weeks but wondered if this is the best deal to continue with? TIA

IMO yes!

Oh as long as it's the cover for life version

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 25/05/2008 14:45

yes`make sure who ever you chose covers an illness for life not just a set amount per condition.
When I was a vet nurse we were not allowed to reccomend anyone but it was petplan leaflets we had all over the surgery.
I am with sainsburys.

NotABanana · 25/05/2008 14:48

I think there are cheaper deals to be had but definitely look at the small print.

Wisteria · 25/05/2008 14:53

For me it depends on the breed and breed line. I have my lab collie x insured with Argos on basic cover as IME the breed very rarely needs any veterinary intervention (quite a healthy line) and my pedigree Giant Schnauzer with petplan's unlimited cover for life as they are prone to more going wrong (as with all pedi's)

Ulysees · 26/05/2008 10:34

thanks for your help I'll look at the small print. Tesco came out at 9.66 and petplan £16.
Giles is collie x whippet......... i think?

I found tesco's very good price wise and what they cover. I know dogs are more expensive but for two young cats, now 4, it was £10 pm total, now £11.50.

I claimed once, about two months after taking it out when one of cats, kitten at the time, swallowed an internet plug socket and some cable. There was £40 excess, (we paid total of £500 up front, vet policy not insurance, they would pa either us or vets) and it was paid back to us promptly.

Insurance did not increase as a result, just usual yearly increases.

I believe most of the policies other than PetPlan won't cover long-term conditions. You do need to read the terms and conditions quite carefully.

Tiggiwinkle · 26/05/2008 10:46

I found Tesco's best when I renewed this year for our two dogs. (They do a basic cover and a "for life" one-make sure you go for the latter. (I used to use Marks and Spencer but they changed their policies this year and are now definitely not good value)

golds · 26/05/2008 10:56

I used to use ASDA they were £9.56 per month - I have just changed to Healthy Pets and now pay £3.50 for basic cover - check them out before deciding. I have a collie X

Ulysees · 26/05/2008 12:07

wow golds just checked out healthy pets and for the gold cover it's only 6.95 I'll be going for that one when the pet plan 4 weeks runs out, thanks.

AFAIK the petplan and kennel club insurances are the only ones which cover for 'life' eg if your dog were diagnosed as diabetic.

The others all have limits of claims per year and won't continue cover on for the following years - it really is worth doing some proper research as everyone says but IME xbreeds are far less likely to suffer from long term conditions anyway as the breed lines are cleaner IYSWIM.

Ulysees · 27/05/2008 13:47

Think I better re-read small print then thanks for that.
