Smelly Labrador!

My gorgeous Lab pongs….

He’s 2.5 now and has never smelt since we got him at 10 weeks, apart from the usual rolling in fox poo etc which was resolved after a quick wash down.
I’ve washed him twice now with recommended doggy shampoo, that didn’t work. I asked the veterinary nurse to check his anal glands last week when he was in having his booster - they were fine.
I’ve googled and seen some people saying they switched to grain free food and that helped, so I’ve started him on that.
The smell only seems to be around his back/above his tail.

Any ideas? I don’t want him to be stinky, I love the bones of him but the smell is pretty grim!

It'll defo be food then. Takes 8 weeks for new food to show up differences. Brush every day.

@Ellejay67 8 weeks?? I didn’t think it’d take that long! I hope the smell improves before then!!

Is it something called Stud Tail?

Are you very bored @CordeliaChaste? Hopefully you’ll be banned as soon as they pick up my report

CordeliaChaste · 18/05/2025 23:31

Eh? Why?

TheMasterplan23 · 18/05/2025 23:41

@FoxChops I’d never heard of that before but I’ve just googled it and it’s a possibility, although there’s no hair loss and he doesn’t seem to be bothered by it or chewing/licking the area.
I think I’ll get him back to the vets to get him checked over. Thanks for your suggestion!

@TheMasterplan23my male ragdoll had it , despite being neutered and it caused him no discomfort. It did resolve itself if I remember correctly but it can certainly cause the smell and it could explain why it’s just in that area

for a food allergy, I’d expect a general all over smell

TheMasterplan23 · 18/05/2025 23:47

@FoxChops yes, I did think that if it was down to the food surely the smell would be all over. I’m hoping I can get him in to the bets tomorrow. Is there anything that’ll help in the meantime? Did you treat it yourself or did the vet prescribe something?

He was a young cat at the time - about 18 months old and the vet just said he’d potentially grow out of it and he did! I noticed it as it was a rather unpleasant almost greasy smell and his fur looked a little greasy too. It was put down to being an adolescent thing. He did have a special antibacterial shampoo but that was it

@CordeliaChasteyou know what I mean. You’re spamming threads with your twatty comments because you’re clearly pathetic. Sorry for you

TheMasterplan23 · 19/05/2025 00:03

@FoxChops thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

@FoxChops well….we’ve been back to the vets twice now. They said no to stud tail and checked his anal glands again. They were fine. The smell hasn’t improved at all so took him back to the vets today and they gave him a thorough checking over and said there’s nothing wrong and think he’s probably just “rolled in fox poo” which is complete nonsense because I’ve washed him 5/6 times since the smell started with the recommended ‘Animology’ fox poo shampoo and still no difference. Also, the couple of occasions he’s rolled in fox poo it’s been around his neck not the bottom of his back/top of his tail 🙄 so I’m at a loss. Just ordered some ‘Omani’ dog chews that are supposed to help with gut stuff and leaky anal glands so hopefully that’ll help! 🤷‍♀️
