Fish plus Cat - possible? Expensive? Help!

Just wondering really - DS would love a goldfish...but we have a kitten

So, would a lidded tank be enough to stop the cat? She's shut out of the living room when we are out and at night so couldn't easily get to them when we aren't here.

Also, are they expensive? How noisy are the filters - I could put it in DS's bedroom then (cat never allowed in bedrooms, you see)

He wants a tank like this which seems a good deal to me?

Any advice?

We have got 2 cats and have had a succession of goldfish, we keep ours on a shelf in the living room, when no one is in there we always shut the door, not only to protect the fish,we have a bird and a hamster, in there as well, the cats loose interest after a couple of attemps.
The filter is not to bad in a living room but might be a bit noisy in a silent bedroom.

We have two cats and tropical fish ( and a dog as well)
The cats watch the fish even sit on tha tank as it is warm and we have never had any problems.

In fact once they were watching the angel fish as they were smimming about and the angel fish suddenly sped from the back to he front of the tank which scared the cats and they ran off!

Ensure there is not a gap at the back of the tank lid through which a kitten could get its paw.

We never really notice our filter but it is in the room with the TV and people chatting. I think the sound is relaxing though.

I would say tbh that that tank is too small, goldfish need more room than people realise.

bamzooki · 18/05/2008 15:13

Agree that a 10L tank would be too small for goldfish, and small tanks are much harder to maintain in terms of water quality - things go wrong much faster.
Biorbs are more expensive, but I'm seriously thinking about getting shot of our big tank (4' x 2' tropical tank anyone?) and having a biorb instead.

Well, I don't think he's too fussed about the breed of fish; could ANYthing live in that tank? (really restricted funds, you see)

We have 3 cats and a variety of fish. We do have to watch Bad Cat when I'm cleaning the tank. Once found her with her head submerged with the silly little curious fish swimming to her to see what new object was in their tank. Was a very cartoon moment.

We have 5 fish and 1 cat. We didn't have a lid. No real problems. Then one fish jumped out. We now have a lid.

From the look of the ad it is a cold water tank - ie no heater, so that rules out the cardinal tetras I was going to suggest!
You could maybe have a few - like 4 or 5 White Cloud Mountain Minnows (am guessing - haven't worked out the max fish for the tank - its to do with total fish length - ie all fish added together, and the surface area of the water to make sure there would be enough oxygenation).
White Cloud Mountain Minnows are a cold water fish and I believe fairly hardy, but pretty all the same - well I think so.

But even so if you can manage a slightly bigger tank it woud be better.
Have you read up on all that's required such as maturing the tank before adding any fish, and regular partial water changes etc?

Alambil · 19/05/2008 12:56

Haven't done any reading up at all bamzooki - this is just in the very first discussion stage.

He also wants a guinea pig (or two) so need to decide which route to go down; I don't want to end up with everything and I don't think he should GET everything he wants!

my fish tank fits under my kitchen work top, so puss cant't get near it anyway, but she has never bothered anyway. my fish are 10 years old now. The filter doesn't make any noise really. There is a chap in my pet city who is really good and will recomedn to you what you really need. I think my large tank was £25+ ish, the filter was the same, apart from plants thats it, and gravel too.
