All chewed to bits by the bloody puppy. he doesn't want the toys we have for him, or the old shoe, no he takes perfectly good socks out of the linen basket and chews holes in them. He's bloody clever mind, he mamanged to get my dirty dancing vinyl LP off the top of the wardrobe and chew it!
He gets plenty of attention - he ha sonly just stopped barking when Is it down. He brings thng sot me to throw, but only good shoes or socks, not the toys he ahs.
how can i stop him from chewing so much. he gets 3 good walks a day, adn played with for 1/2 hour every night

When I read the title I thought thats what you had collected for a car boot sale

There is some spray you can get from pet stores

saltire · 17/05/2008 22:17

I have tried spray - he just licks it off!

Rawhide chews to encourage the right things to chew, shut off rooms so he can't get access to things, and consider a cage for him when unsupervised until he gets through the chewing phase.

magnolia74 · 18/05/2008 10:31

Probably not what you want to hear but my dogs are 2.5 and 3.5 and still chew lots
The last thing was my gorgeous knee high boots
Mine are crate trained but still manage to sneak things in there!!!

ladytophamhatt · 18/05/2008 10:34

Hey Mag, how are you?

been thinking about you lots.

(sorry to hi-jack BTW)

We have 6 pairs of running shoes, an elecrtic wire plugged into the wall -how didn't die we'll never know, a pair of Kitchen curtains -both had Jack Russell sized holes in and are now 1/2m shorter and hangining in SIL's house, God knows how many socks as he nicks them out of the basket, the sofa cushion, skirting boards -the corners are apparently very tasty, table/chair legs, my the arm of my Hobbs woollen coat and that's just off the top of my head!

NO toy lasts longer than a morning. The thing you are supposed to put food into and let them try to get it out he ate the top off in about 2 hrs...

I am watching this thread with interest to see if anyone has any answers....

oh, and he wees in his bed and sleeps in it too, even the pet behaviourist couldn't solve that one

muppetgirl · 18/05/2008 10:36

beautiful girls - we have a cage and he just weed in it and then slept in the wee.

I need the dog wisperer....

I would avoid giving him old shoes, he can't spot the difference between an old slipper and the most expensive pair of shoes.

I'm afraid the only thing you can do to prevent more damage is to keep an eye on him and EVERYTHING out of reach (one of my dogs managed to go through the 4 chairs of my dinning room in a single morning... we had to buy new ones!)

Always keep him in the same room you are, if you can't consider putting him in a crate to keep your things protected and him safe (says here someone who has just paid £850 in vet bills to have 14 pieces of a plastic ball removed from the tummy of an unsensible yorkie)

The good news is that teething doesn't last forever so eventually it will be ok (provided he doesn't keep some bad habits out of the teething phase)

Lemon juice worked for us. Our dog was constantly chewing the coffee table, rubbed it with lemon juice and he never did it again.

woodstock3 · 19/05/2008 10:36

our puppy has eaten all our skirting boards, the edges of all the stairs, numerous shoes, the top of ds's shapesorter, several of ds's library books (including one called I Dont Bite), a hole in the wall , a chequebook, the edge of a persian rug, and removed an entire piece of carpet from the stairs. he has been to the vets twice (took fridge magnets off the fridge, chewed and swallowed them; took a bottle of vitamin tablets off the table, chewed it and ate about 30 multivitamins - very shiny coat these days ). the only consolation is that he is now nearly a year old and he has pretty much stopped - we left him for five hours yesterday to go to children's party and to my amazement got back to find nothing destroyed.
for now, just put everything imaginable that you wouldn't want chewed out of reach, get a puppy crate for those times you can't not leave them, and resign yourself to a reign of destruction. someone told us to try sprinkling cayenne pepper on things he chews - we tried this but he just chewed, sneezed and carried on chewing.

magnolia74 · 19/05/2008 20:37

My dog likes pepper etc.....

justwaterformethanks · 20/05/2008 09:08

cheap perfume ,the smell goes really quickly but it tastes foul !! worked with my parents labs

mistlethrush · 20/05/2008 09:15

Tabasco sauce. REALLY hot!

Our rescued 8mo only really wanted to chew bones and sticks (which are not ideal, but better than some of the other options). We even let her keep a relatively splinter free large stick inside for chewing, and got her some of the baked bones to eat in the garden.

One of my parent's dogs didn't stop chewing until she was about 4. She got through quite a few pairs of shoes, lots of rolls of selotape pencils, toothbrushes, tubes of toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, onions, apples, muddy carrots (completely eaten). One of her favourite toys which is also a toy favoured by our dog, was old socks knotted together - can also work for tights - knot as tightly as possible, great for tugging as well as chewing.

bella29 · 28/05/2008 13:16

I could forgive all the rest but the Dirty Dancing album?! That would break my heart!

bella29 · 28/05/2008 13:17

P.S. Did he eat all of David Tennant or did he leave you a bit?

saltire · 29/05/2008 09:13

His chewing is getting more destructive. He has taken a huge chunk of plaster off the wall where he sleeps - its a cupboard next to teh garage, quite a decent size, room to move around etc.
He has also taken to climbing on the table to get to clothes, is obsessed with socks. he has loads of hard toys that he can chew on,but he won't. its clothes, shoes and hard things like the broom handle, the scrubbing brush etc.
I ahve tried puppy sprays, etc they don't work, will need to get some cheap eprfume. I'm wondering if it's too alte to start crate training him. We are going to my mums in 7/8 weeks and he will have to sleep in her kitchen, and I ahve visions of coming down in the morning to a table with no legs! the table is over 80 years old as well, so that won't be fun!

Not too late to crate train - you can do it with any age of dog & I reckon if you don't do it soon you'll have no house left!

Seriously, though, start off with putting his meals in there so it's a treat to go in the crate and work up gradually. There may be some downloads of info on the Dogs Trust website if I remember correctly.

Apologies if I'm repeating anyone else's advice, but a Kong toy with peanut butter smeared in the cavity should keep him amused for a bit. It's often boredom and/or separation anxiety that makes them destructive.

Best of luck!

woodstock3 · 31/05/2008 16:17

crate train now while your walls are still standing
ours could spend quite a long time destroying a newspaper if in destructive mood - good if you have to leave them to their own devices for a bit, and dont mind clearing up shredded newspaper (i find it's then ready to go in the compost....)
